Those who heard about the premiere of the series "The Witch", of course, are familiar with the name More Mortir. Who this is is of interest to many. Unfortunately, for the most part, people who answer this question are mistaken and provide a deliberately false answer. So who is she?
TV series
This picture was shot in 2015 by Ukrainian directors and is currently available for viewing on many sites. The creators position their offspring as "unparalleled."
"Witch" refers to the genre of drama with elements of mysticism and consists of 20 series.
The multi-part film tells the story of a girl named Nadezhda (it will later be called More Mortir). Who it is and where it came from, it becomes clear far from the first series, since the second performer of one of the main roles finds her under rather strange circumstances.
The plot of the series
The action takes place in a remote provincial village, the inhabitants of which voluntarily abandoned the benefits of civilization in order to avoid city bustle. The central figure is a mysterious stranger who is caught by a local blacksmith from the river. The girl is so weak that she can not bind a word, so a man does not come up with anything better than taking her to his home.
The blacksmith nurses Nadia, but she is in no hurry to leave his home, because she does not remember anything about how she ended up in the village. Meanwhile, the girl’s relations with the population do not add up: she has such a stunning charm that local single guys can’t ignore her.
Because of this, women begin to accuse Nadezhda of witchcraft, and her acquaintance gives him the nickname "Sea Mortar" - a witch.
About the main character
In the series, the performer of the role should play a pretty kind and soft girl. Hope is charming in her confusion and simplicity, therefore it is not surprising that she likes the male half of the population.
Despite the seemingly false accusation of witchcraft, the girl really reveals the ability to witchcraft and white magic. Contrary to the opinions of others, Hope is a good witch, although this does not save her from universal condemnation.
In the course of the development of the plot, the negative attitude towards the girl only grows stronger, since the wife of the blacksmith, who lives with a young fortuneteller, unexpectedly returns to the village. She turns out to be a hereditary witch and uses her powers against her rival with might and main.
Sea Mortar: who is it
Initially, the creators of the series wanted to draw a parallel with the Slavic goddess of death and harvest - Morena. But, apparently, the name was too simple, so it was turned on a European motive.
In fact, however, from Latin Mare (or Sea) is translated as “sea”, “reservoir”, so it’s rather difficult to say what prompted the scriptwriters to call the main character so: a desire to Europeanize the Slavic name or a thoughtful move hinting at the initial scene of the girl’s appearance in the series.
Mortar, from ancient Greek, means “sufferer,” which, in principle, fits into the overall plot picture.
Moraine
This name is a very negative character of Slavic mythology. Morena (Mara, Morana, Marghena) - the goddess of Winter, harvest and death. The annual withering of nature and the severity of frost were associated with its coming to earth.
For the Slavs, she was the embodiment of evil spirits, pestilence and other misfortunes. When strong blizzards began, people hid in their homes and tried not to leave until the weather settled. It was believed that this Morena was riding around her property on a sleigh, and she would be very unlucky to anyone who caught her at that moment.
Thus, this character has nothing to do with the definition of "good witch." Although it cannot be called outright evil: according to myths, Mara only fulfilled the duty assigned to her by Rod. The death that this goddess brings is not the end - it is an intermediate stage, the transition to the "new Beginning".
The same can be said about the assistants of the mistress of Death, although for the most part they did not cause significant physical harm to others. But they could scare them with their ugly appearance, so the Slavs tried to avoid meeting them without leaving the yard at night.
For a long time, Mara remained a character who scared naughty children. And even now, the memory of her has not completely outlived herself, because it’s her effigy that is still burned for Shrovetide.
The myth of the appearance of Morena
There are several versions: in one of them, Moran is the only daughter of Koshchei, in the other is the sister of Lada. In the most popular variation, Mara is also connected with Lada by family ties, but in her she is the mother of the goddess of Death. Sisters of the future villain - Alive and Lelia, mistress of life and spring.
Morena herself captivates Koschei and becomes his wife, but, instead of shrouding the world in darkness with him, the goddess tricks her husband into one of the rooms of the castle, and for a while becomes his only mistress. Thus, the goddess is also very cunning, therefore she is identified with fog and hassle, unknown forces that lead a person astray.
Given these facts, the parallel between More Mortir (who she is, described above) and the mythological character is practically not traced. Of course, the heroine of the series is also beautiful, but even her appearance has nothing to do with the canonical goddess, and Hope does not shine with a special cunning.
Conclusion
So, in fact, from all of the above, it turns out that More Mortir is a fictional character invented specifically for the series “The Witch”. He has nothing to do with either the Slavs or their giveings. Therefore, a frequently asked question regarding More Mortir ("who is this in mythology?") Is obviously incorrect.
