The Cross Exaltation Church of Tyumen is one of the historical sights of the city. Its full name is the temple in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-giving Cross of the Lord. The article will briefly describe the history of the church, the current state of affairs of the parish, and the schedule of services.
Short story
The temple was founded in 1774 at the southern tip of the Tyumen cape, at the confluence of the Tura and Tyumen rivers. There used to be a wooden church, which was destroyed by fire.
The church was built at the expense of parishioners and was consecrated in 1791. It was originally called Voskresensky and was built in the Baroque style. In 1937, a fence with two gates was erected around it. The large octagonal dome with a cross and the quadruple head were covered with gilding. In 1845, the building underwent restoration, as a result of which it somewhat changed its appearance. So, the rich stucco molding on the facade was lost - the Baroque decor. The general impression, however, did not suffer from this: the temple only began to look grander and stricter.
After restoration, the temple was renamed and became known as the Holy Cross Church. In the XIX century it was reconstructed more than once. In 1873, ecclesiastical houses were erected on church lands.
Parishioners of the Holy Cross Church in Tyumen (photo above) at the beginning of the twentieth century were residents of four neighboring villages. These were the villages of Kazanskaya, Voronina, Meteleva, Knyazheva - a total of 183 yards. Of the church buildings, there was a chapel, a wooden barn sheathed with testers, and a church library of 376 volumes.
After the revolution
In Soviet times, the fate of the Holy Cross Church in Tyumen, as well as many churches in the country, was unenviable. Services in it were held until 1929. The bell tower was dismantled, the head with a cross and four small chapters were removed. After the temple was closed, its building was used as a workshop, shooting gallery, DOSAAF school and even a club. It arranged two floors.
The revival of the temple began in 1993, after the transfer of the building of the Tobolsk-Tyumen diocese. Fr. Sergius (Kistin S.S.), His repair and restoration lasted five years. Under his leadership, the forces of volunteers removed the partitions and concrete floor. The Cross Exaltation Church in Tyumen was restored from surviving photographs. Since 1995, the temple has been assigned to the Holy Trinity Monastery. Father Tikhon, who soon received the rank of abbot, was appointed rector. In 1997, the ecclesiastical school building was erected, in which the Orthodox gymnasium was later located.
The bell tower was erected in 1998. After a long break, services were resumed in 1998. The restoration of the building was completed on August 26, 1998 by installing a large octagonal dome on it. The consecration of the temple was conducted by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy on August 31. The new building of the theological school, built in 1999, constitutes a single architectural ensemble with the building.
Description
The architectural composition of the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is based on a traditional two-ternary quadruple with five chapters and a characteristic baroque division of the high dome into segments with curved edges. The bell tower was erected in the form of a traditional octagon with a sloping roof. The initial interior decoration and decoration of the temple were completely lost. The walls of the temple inside are white. In plan it has a rectangular shape. The bell tower, due to its strict forms, vaguely resembles a fortress tower.
The Holy Cross Church of Tyumen has two thrones: in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the main - the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Accordingly, patronal feasts in the church are May 22, December 19 and September 27.
The temple is an architectural monument of the XXVIII century and is protected by law, which is indicated on the board installed at the entrance.
