How it works and where the WOT server is located

The server infrastructure of World ofTanks is a huge, synchronized system. It consists of several regional servers, divided into special synchronized groups of personal computers called clusters. Each WOT server is connected by high-speed channels forming a single user hardware resource. Any of the mentioned groups of PCs is divided into small clusters that are not synchronized with each other. This allows smoothing peaks of network traffic. Each WOT server has a standard configuration for modern data centers. Thus, one cluster, whose capacity is determined by 160 thousand simultaneous users, requires about a hundred game servers, as well as up to ten powerful servers as databases.

Where is the WOT server located?

In the process of developing this project, as well as entering the company in regional markets, its infrastructure is constantly growing, new centers are opening, and the number of clusters is increasing. At the moment, the project has four main data centers: European, North American, Russian and Chinese. Russian WOT server started working in 2010, and in less than two years the number of users on it exceeded the mark of five million. At the moment, the Russian cluster is located in the capital of our country. Now within the Russian โ€œgalaxyโ€ of servers there are seven main groups, four of which are located in Moscow, and one each in Novosibirsk, Munich (Germany) and Amsterdam (Netherlands). The European group consists of two clusters located in Munich. American includes only one server (Washington, USA). Asian, the youngest, opened in 2012, deployed in Singapore (Malaysia) and in Seoul (Korea). There is also a Chinese cluster, which consists of two groups located in the cities of Hebei and Shanghai.

Appointment

The game server is designed to perform computing and communication functions. That is, they receive data from the players, process it and send updates to game clients. Moreover, the separation or combination of these functions is constantly changing within a specific physical cluster. All messages received by the server and the user are recorded along with additional information, for example, about the time of receipt. The system uses this data to determine how to update the state of the game client. For example, the server received a message that was not processed for 100 ms, in which case the system compensates for this period during the update.

This system is intended for preliminary testing of planned updates to the gameplay. Test servers are launched for a short time, during which developers, thanks to the players, can "run in" new items, which will subsequently be introduced into the game. Thus, as part of the general test, special clients are created with a different version. Test server 0.8.6. It was launched on the first of June 2013 and worked for 6 days. During the indicated period, a โ€œrun-inโ€ of the new โ€œSacred Valleyโ€ map was carried out, changes to some old maps, as well as expansion of the self-propelled gun development branches to the tenth level.
