Today's article is dedicated to those people who have home Internet access through the old ADSL modem. Today, many providers still offer the Internet through such obsolete technologies, but sometimes there is simply no alternative. One of these providers is Rostelecom. In this article, you will learn how to connect a router through a Rostelecom modem, but with other ADSL modems this will also work.
Wiring diagrams
If you are currently using a connection via an ADSL modem, then your circuit looks something like this: the telephone cable is connected to a splitter (or splitter). From this splitter, one wire goes to the home telephone (however, it may not be), the other to the modem. And from the modem, the twisted pair network cable is connected directly to a computer or laptop. A similar scheme is actively practiced today.
The easiest way to connect the router via a modem is to create an additional link in this chain in the form of a Wi-Fi router. We simply use the same twisted pair cable to create a connection between the router (WAN port) and the ADSL modem.
How to connect a Wi-Fi router via a modem: methods
To implement such a scheme, you can use several methods:
- Make the modem work as a bridge, and the router as an access point (that is, a router). In this configuration, settings must be made on the router.
- The second method involves the use of a router as a "continuation" of the signal.
Note that the second method is the simplest. In this case, practically nothing needs to be done. Only a minimum is required: configure the router to receive a dynamic address and activate the address distribution mode via the DHCP network. Most users know that this needs to be done, but they don’t know how. Connecting the modem as a router, where the latter will act as the “distributor” of the Internet, is easy: in the settings of the router in the Advanced tab (the name of the tab may depend on the model of the router and the manufacturer) there is a DHCP option. It must be activated, and then any device connected to a Wi-Fi router will automatically connect to the Internet. Before connecting the modem as a router, you need to make sure that all the settings in the ADSL modem are already there. They are usually entered by the employee of the provider.
The second way: how to connect a WIFI router to a modem
Given that the first option is the most difficult, it is worth disassembling it using the most common D-Link router as an example. So, insert the cable with the small connector into the ADSL connector of the modem, and insert the patch cord into the LAN connector and connect it to the computer or laptop.
Modem settings
Now you need to enter the settings on the computer itself. We go to the Windows control panel (Start - Control Panel), find the "Network and Internet" tab and click on "Network Management". There we are interested in the item "Change adapter settings". Find "Local Area Connection", right-click and select "Properties". There you need to install all the TCP / IPv4 protocol settings on the machine.
Now in the browser, type the address 192.168.1.1 and get into the admin panel of your router. Here you need to enter a username / password pair. Enter admin / admin (by default). In the menu that appears in the Quick Setup section, uncheck the box next to the DSL Auto Connect line and enter values for the VPI and VCI lines. They must be obtained from the provider. Also, these values can be specified in the connection agreement, so do not rush to call the provider. In the PORT item, write the value "0". Now click on "Next" (Next) and opposite the value of Bridging we put a flag. So we put the modem in bridge mode. You also need to check the box next to Enable Bridge Service and specify a name for the bridge. Further, we will be required to register the IP address and modem mask. We register there: 192.168.1.1 and the standard network mask 255.255.255.0.

Click "Next" and carefully look at the settings again. The system will ask you to save and reboot the router. We agree and restart the computer with the modem so that it receives a new IP address.
Now let's move on to setting up our Wi-Fi router. First of all, remove the cable from the laptop and insert it into the router. It must be connected to the modem via the WAN connector, and to the computer via any LAN port. Now we connect to the router, go to its settings in the WAN section and select PPPoE as the connection. Now we need to enter all the data that the provider provided us (password, login), apply the settings, save. After that, the router will distribute the Internet from the ADSL modem. Now you know how to connect a modem as a router, but there are still ways.
Sharing from a laptop
The fact is that the laptop or computer itself can be used as a router, and setting it up is simple, you just need to know how. You can connect the modem as a router using a computer only if it has a Wi-Fi adapter. On laptops, it is by default. The diagram will look like this: a small telephone cable enters the modem’s ADSL connector, twisted-pair cable goes directly into the laptop from the modem. A laptop (or computer) gets access to the Network and shares it over Wi-Fi. Will you need settings for this? Yes, but now there are special programs for sharing the Internet via Wi-Fi, for example, Connectify Hotspot. There are other programs for this purpose, but the essence is always the same. You can also share the Internet using the built-in Windows tools, but this is a big topic for a separate article.
Conclusion
The indicated methods of connecting a router through a modem work in 80% of cases. Depending on your model of router or modem, the names of the settings that were mentioned in the article may differ, but the essence remains the same. Therefore, do not focus on the names in this case. In general, setting up the router and modem will not take you much time if you did everything correctly.
