The Audi 80 B2 is a mid-size car that was released in the 70s and 80s. Initially, the history of the model began in 1966. And ended in 1996. At first, the base, which belonged to Volkswagen Passat, was taken as a platform. This model has a rather interesting and rich history, so it’s worth telling about it at least briefly.
About Model
Initially, I would like to tell you some basic information about this car. “Audi 80 B2” was produced for thirteen years - from 1975 to 1988. Almost 1,700,000 copies were sold during this time! Of these, only 170 thousand coupe versions. The most popular were 2- and 4-door sedans.
In total, nine different versions were offered to potential buyers of that time. All of them were distinguished by one extremely important detail. And this, of course, is the engine. There was one 1.3-liter version, three - with a volume of 1.6 liters (standard, turbodiesel and diesel). There were also cars equipped with 1.8-, 1.9-, 2.0-, 2.1-, 2.2-liter engines.
The dimensions of the Audi 80 B2 are as follows: 4383 mm long, 1682 mm wide, 1365 mm high. The wheelbase is 2540 mm, and the mass is a maximum of 1190 kg (a minimum of 930 kilograms, and the figure depended on the configuration).
Late 70s
“Audi 80 B2” in 1978 received its own platform, its name was known as Tyoe 81. In Europe, the company continued to use the number 80 as a brand, but in North America this car became known as the Audi 4000 (or with the prefix S). Klaus Lute worked initially on how the body should look. However, then he went to BMW, because Giorgetto Giugiaro dealt with this issue. And he succeeded quickly and successfully.
In most cases, customers ordered 4-door sedans. But models with two doors also enjoyed some popularity. It was decided not to produce station wagons, since then Volkswagen Passat was successful in this niche . Interestingly, in the United States, the basic equipment fully corresponded to the European Audi 80 CD. This car had one very bright feature - it corresponded to the strictest standards regarding the content of harmful emissions in exhaust gases.
Eighties
The car “Audi 80 B2”, the photo of which is presented above, was considered a standard version. However, then, in 1984, it was decided to release another model. And she became known as the “Audi 90”. In fact, it was an absolute copy of its predecessor. The only thing that differed from the “Audi 80 B” was the power unit, the volume of which was larger. Some options were added too. So, for example, a potential buyer could choose a 5-cylinder 2.2-liter I5 engine with a volume (power was 115 and 136 hp). Later, by the way, the engine was increased still - up to 2.3 liters. Another choice was provided turbodiesel I4. Its power was equal to 75 horsepower. The car was offered with both front-wheel and rear-wheel drive.
The novelty also had an ABS system, and if a person wanted and had such an opportunity (financial, of course), they offered him the same, but in the amount of 3725 DM. Also, this car could boast of power windows, a sunroof on the lid, wipers on the headlights, air conditioning and even cruise control.
Platform features
“Audi 80 B2”, the scheme of which was developed by manufacturers for a long time, turned out to be a very promising machine. No wonder she became so popular. Its platform is a universal and profitable base. Its components were borrowed from Audi Coupe, Quattro, Sport-Quattro. And these cars, as many people know, cemented the brand in the eyes of fans of Audi cars. The permanent all-wheel drive system (the name of which is Quattro) found its purpose in different types of races. And it is applied to this day.
By the way, another interesting and practical point regarding the car “Audi 80 B2”. Repair is not a problem at all when it comes to this model. Because, as mentioned above, many parts were taken from several other machines. So the search for “donors” does not require much time. And, by the way, repairs are also rarely required. Here, the basic principle is careful operation. “Audi” - a car assembled soundly, so breakdowns are rare. Indeed, even today, in 2016, people sell B2-models, and in good condition. Speaking of price. Today, this car can be bought for a very reasonable amount. 100 thousand rubles - this is the amount for which a person can get a car with a good chassis, without complaints about the body and with a perfectly working engine.
Specifications
This topic is also worth mentioning. As already mentioned, there were several modifications. The most powerful version was considered to be with a 115-horsepower engine (2.2 MT Quattro). She could accelerate to 193 km / h! A good indicator for the late 70's! To hundreds, it accelerated a little more than 9 seconds, and the flow rate was 10 liters per 100 km.
There was also a model with a maximum of 184 km / h (the engine was also 115-horsepower, but of a smaller volume), acceleration was 10 seconds, and the flow rate was 8.5 liters. The weakest car was considered with a 60-horsepower engine. The maximum speed is 148 km / h, acceleration - 17 seconds to hundreds, and consumption - almost 9 liters. There were also three versions of 75, 70 and 90 liters. from. - The so-called middle ground between the most powerful and weakest models.
Interesting information
B2 sedans could be purchased in Europe until the end of 1986. In the rest of the world, cars were sold until 1987. The coupe version, if I may say so, was delayed for another year. Until 1988, it could be purchased. But then the models were replaced.
By the way, in 1984, the company's specialists decided to make some changes in the car. The taillights changed (they seemed to be a copy of those that were installed on the “Audi 100”). The front and rear bumpers have changed, the luggage cover, dashboard and shift paddles began to look different . A brand new, modern (at that time) steering wheel appeared. Headlights also began to look different - more expressive, one might say. Specialists also improved the wiring, and it was decided to transfer the fuse box under the hood.
In 1983, the world was provided with a sports version of the model. It was built on the Audi 80 GTE. And it was a really good car with impressive technical specifications.
