Polarizing glasses: varieties and principles of work

Today, there is an unspoken struggle between the two technologies for displaying 3D images, which can be seen using special active or passive polarizing glasses.

The latter include any stereo glasses for the operation of which does not require a power source. There are two types of devices working on this technology: polarizing and anaglyphic.

The main advantage of the models is their low cost. The cheapest are anaglyphs, which are usually made of cardboard with two colors of glass - blue and red.

Despite the fact that this method allows you to get some volume effect, it is still considered not the most advanced in creating 3D effects. In anaglyph stereopairs, a certain color filter is used to obtain a picture, while the rest of the information is practically lost, leaving a faded, dull image.

3D polarized glasses can be divided into two subspecies: with circular and linear polarization. The latest image acquisition model requires the viewer to place his head in a strictly vertical position, avoiding deviations to the sides, otherwise the 3D effect may be disturbed.

This is due to the fact that the method of displaying content is based on the principle that with one eye you can see a polarized image vertically, and the second - horizontally.

When tilting the head, the lenses lose touch with the dual method of obtaining stereo pairs on the screen. To eliminate this drawback are capable of polarizing glasses 3D, working on a circular technology. However, in this case, a special filter and projector are required. In this form, glasses are not common.

Another advantage of passive devices over active ones is that there is no β€œhalving" of the frame rate, since two images are simultaneously shown to the viewer.

However, polarizing glasses have a number of disadvantages. Unlike active, in passive models, the viewer will be able to see only 540 lines of the entire resolution for each eye. Of course, this is provided that the image source produces a resolution of 1080 lines.

The advantages of eyepieces include the lack of the need for a power source, adjustment to the image transmission device, as well as low cost. Polarizing glasses can be purchased for several dollars, and most often the manufacturer of the TV additionally puts several pairs of such products in the kit. For example, with the LG TV comes 4 pairs of glasses.

Therefore, under such conditions, arranging a movie show for the whole family in 3D will be much cheaper. In addition, when using polarized devices, your eyes do not get tired, because they do not have constantly opening and closing shutters, as in active technology. In addition, such glasses have less weight, and when watching a movie a person gets less tired.

Currently, using passive 3D technology, LG, Toshiba (supports both principles), Vizio and other brands are being produced. Samsung, Sony and Panasonic use an active image output model.
