Do-it-yourself replacement of wheel bearings on the VAZ-2109: algorithm of work

Before starting repairs, make sure that the bearing is really defective - it is quite possible that the breakdown is not in it, but in some other suspension element. Therefore, you need to find out what symptoms appear with a defective bearing.

Failure symptoms

Before starting work on replacing the wheel bearing on the VAZ-2109, you need to carefully consider all the symptoms that characterize its breakdown.

Among the main ones are:

1. Strong hum from the side of the damaged element.
2. The appearance of strong vibration.
3. The appearance of extraneous sounds - a crunch, rattle.

Of course, a rumble is the first sign that the bearing has ordered a long life. But sometimes it does not appear, instead of it other sounds are heard, and the steering play also increases. After disassembling the assembly, try to rotate the bearing - if you can hear the balls rolling around inside, the element must be changed.

What tools will be required to work

And now let's talk about what tools are needed when replacing the wheel bearings on the VAZ-2109. The rear and front change almost the same, but there are slight differences. Tool List:

1. The key is "30". It will be required to unscrew the nuts on the hub. You can use a long lever and head.
2. Stripper for retaining rings - tongs with nozzles.
3. Puller for hub bearings - bolt, nut, several metal washers.
4. Universal puller for bearings.
5. Hammer, chisel.
6. Tool kit - wrenches, pliers, mount, etc.

Having at hand all the necessary tools, you can begin to carry out repairs.

Assembly disassembly

Before replacing the wheel bearings on the VAZ-2109, it is necessary to completely disassemble the suspension part. The algorithm of operations is approximately the following:

1. Remove the protective cap and unscrew the nut with a sharp punch.
2. With the key on “30”, loosen the nut tightening. A lot of effort must be made, so good leverage may be required.
3. Lift the car on the jack and loosen the wheel fasteners to the hub.
4. Install stops under the rear wheels so that the machine does not roll during work. Be sure to place supports under the body so that the machine does not accidentally fall off the jack.
5. Unscrew the rack mount to the steering knuckle. Also unscrew the two bolts that secure the ball joint.
6. Remove the front wheel caliper by unscrewing the two bolts with the key on the "17".
7. Carefully remove the steering knuckle. The hub is connected to it using a bearing.

Now you can proceed directly to the replacement of the wheel bearing on the VAZ-2109. Please note that when disassembling, be sure to plan the location of the steering knuckle relative to the rack.

Bearing replacement and assembly

Now we begin to change the bearing:

1. The main thing is to disconnect the hub and the steering knuckle. To do this, first remove the snap ring, which is located on the inside.
2. Hit the inside of the hub with a hammer to knock it out. As a rule, it pops up very quickly, but with an internal bearing race. It must be removed using a universal puller with two legs. By the way, if you look at the hub, you will see two recesses on it - it is in them that you install the legs of the puller.
3. Using a puller, remove the bearing from the steering knuckle.
4. Install a new bearing and snap rings. It is recommended to lubricate the inner surface of the fist - the bearing will enter more easily.

Assemble in the reverse order. On this, the replacement of the wheel bearing on the VAZ-2109 can be considered completed. If possible, then at the same time replace the ball joint and CV joints (if they have exhausted their resource).
