Talk about electric guitars: guitar neck and its meaning

The neck of the guitar is its most important part, affecting not only the convenience of playing the guitar, but also the quality of its sound. It is on it that the strings and frets are located.

Perhaps, it should start with the fact that electric guitars can have three types of fretboards, depending on the type of their attachment: screwed, through and glued. Screwed on, as the name implies, are attached to the body of the electric guitar with screws, glued are glued, and through ones are one with the body.

Of course, each of the types has its pros and cons. So, a screwed-in guitar neck can be easily removed for repair or replacement, and its cost is low. However, it cannot give very good sound.

Through vultures look very aesthetically pleasing, durable, never loose and will not fall off. Electric guitars with this type of fretboard have excellent sound, and their lack of a heel makes it easy to reach the highest frets. However, the cost of such guitars is quite high due to the complexity of their manufacture, and a broken neck cannot be changed.

Optimal, perhaps, are guitars with a glued neck - they do not cost too much, the sound is good, and the mount is reliable. Of course, it is impossible to replace a broken neck with them, but in case of breakage, the losses will not be as great as in the case of the through type.

But if everything is simple with types - you can work with each of them, then there are parameters that are mandatory for all electric guitars. So, the neck of the guitar - any! - in no case should it be straight, otherwise when playing the strings will touch the frets. Therefore, its ideal shape will be a curve passing through the points of the greatest amplitude of each string. Another thing is that it is very difficult to find such a neck.

In addition, the neck should not have any chips and scratches. It is necessary to check and order - of course, it may not be ideal, but the detuning should not be large. People who do not have perfect ear for music can check this by the distance between frets and strings - it should not be too large - and by the mood of the scale.

By the way, if we talk about the scale, it, like the neck of the guitar itself, is different. For electric guitars, its length varies from 60.3 to 64.8 centimeters. The greater this length, the more difficult it is to play the guitar, but the less percussive the shade of sound.

Of considerable importance to any musician is the material from which the guitar neck is made. This is usually maple or mahogany (directly vulture) and maple, ebony or rosewood (front). Of course, there are guitars made of cheaper wood or plastic.

It should be noted that not only the appearance, but also the sound of the guitar depends on the material. An instrument made of high-quality wood can play amazing melodies that amaze with depth and sound quality. But guitars made of cheap material - especially plastic - do not sound very good.

When choosing an electric guitar, it is important to notice not only the material from which the fretboard is made, but also its quality - if it is a tree, then it should have a uniform color and structure, nothing should interfere with the sliding of fingers on the back of the fretboard.

In addition, you should carefully examine the frets - their number should be 21, 22 or 24. Their number determines how many notes can be played on this guitar.

Bright, shiny marks on the front of the neck deserve attention. They are needed to make it easier for beginner guitarists to remember the location of notes on the guitar neck. These pearlescent spots should be applied on the third, fifth, seventh, ninth and twelfth frets, less often - also on the fifteenth, seventeenth and nineteenth.

By the way, those who study the musical structure can be helped not only by them, but also by drawings, which are very common among beginner guitarists, which schematically depict the guitar neck, notes, frets and strings.
