A few years ago, some of the graduates of Novosibirsk schools were going to apply to the Novosibirsk State Academy of Water Transport. This educational institution attracted the attention of applicants for its positive reputation. He was talked about as one of the leading transport universities in our country. To date, there is no academy with that name in the city, so modern entrants have many questions: where did the university go, was it transformed, can it still be entered?
The path from institute to academy
Higher educational institution of water transport in Novosibirsk was opened in 1951. At first it bore the status of an institute. It was organized 3 faculties responsible for the training of personnel of certain specializations. Gradually, the university expanded. It opened new structural divisions and specialties.
A few years after the opening, the university began to engage in scientific activities: conduct research and development, create inventions, publish articles written by employees. All achievements increased the prestige of the institute. In 1994, the educational institution received the status of an academy. This change confirmed the high quality of educational and scientific activities.
Academy existence
At that time, when the Novosibirsk State Academy of Water Transport (NGAHT) was functioning, there were 6 faculties in its composition:
- navigational;
- electromechanical;
- hydraulic engineering;
- ship mechanical;
- water transport management;
- by correspondence.
In all structural divisions, high-quality training was conducted for organizations and enterprises of the water transport industry, related industries. Students studying at the university received higher education in several areas and specialties. For example, there were such educational programs as “Shipbuilding”, “Operation of ship power plants”, “Hydrotechnical construction”, “Complex use and protection of natural resources”, “Organization of transportation and transport management”.
Obtaining a new status and changing the name
In 2015, the familiar name of the Novosibirsk State Academy of Water Transport was no longer heard. And this happened for a simple reason - the status of the university has changed. The Academy has achieved significant success in its development, so it was made a university. The name has also changed. Since 2015, the educational institution is called the Siberian State University of Water Transport.
Today, the university offers not only higher education, but also secondary vocational education. You can study not only in Novosibirsk, but also in other cities where the branches of the educational institution work. University higher education programs are additionally implemented in Omsk, Yakutsk, Khabarovsk, and training programs for middle managers in Omsk, Yakutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Ust-Kut.
As an example, we can consider one of the branches of the university - the Krasnoyarsk Institute of Water Transport. Its past name is the Yenisei branch of the Novosibirsk State Academy of Water Transport. This is not a very large educational institution. It offers only 3 secondary vocational education programs:
- “Operation of power ship installations”;
- "Navigation";
- "Operation of automation and marine electrical equipment."
Modern faculties and specialties
The organizational structure of the university after changing status and name has not undergone major changes. All the same faculties that once worked at the Novosibirsk State Academy of Water Transport (NGAVT) remained at the university. Only the correspondence structural unit has changed. Previously, in it, people received only higher education. Today, students are studying under the programs of both higher and secondary vocational education.
There are a lot of directions and specialties at the university. Education is carried out in bachelor's, specialty and master's degrees.

The most sought-after specialists were and remain graduates of naval specialties. Every year, applications are received from universities such as Tomsk Shipping Company OJSC, Severrechflot JSC, Far Eastern Shipping Company OJSC, Vodokhod LLC, etc.
Of the graduates of coastal specialties, shipbuilders and ship mechanics are in high demand. They are invited to work shipyards from different cities of Russia. Persons educated in "Technology of transport processes", "Management of water vehicles and hydrographic support of navigation", are employed in sea and river ports.
