Have you noticed, visiting your friends and acquaintances, which part of their apartment sometimes makes a not very pleasant impression? Oddly enough, but this is not a toilet room, not a hallway, and not even a balcony ... More often than not, the ceiling is in terrible condition.
There are many reasons for this: there are neighbors who are trying to flood, and reluctance to get involved in the dirty and very hard work of repairing it. Yes, and it’s often scary to contact repair companies: they ask for such amounts that ceiling hairs stand on end involuntarily ... However, you still have to return to the ceiling, because its terrifying appearance does not help to create comfort in the room. So how to
align the ceilings with your own hands?Over time, the surface of the ceilings becomes unusable, cracks and bumps appear. We have to make repairs. There are two types of alignment: the so-called “dry” and “raw” methods. “Dry” refers to alignment using plastic panels, ceiling tiles, drywall sheets and similar materials. “Raw” means work using materials and mixtures with a water content (putties, primers, etc.). It is the crude method that is most often used by professional builders, since it gives optimal results. Since aligning the ceilings with this method is quite difficult, it is best to thoroughly study the theory before performing repairs.
When using the "raw" method, it is worth paying attention to the choice of material. If the defects are small, then a putty can be used for finishing, with a fine-grained structure. In case of large defects of the ceiling: wide cracks,
ceiling tiles, deformed or located at different heights, you should first use the starting putty or plaster. It should be noted that with extensive defects and complete peeling of the old coating, it is necessary to completely remove it and apply construction mixtures again. Before leveling the
ceiling with plaster, it does not hurt to walk around the construction sites and choose the most advantageous offers from sellers. An attempt to save time and material leads to the fact that you have to redo everything all over again.
In addition, one should not try to “cheat” by patching up all surface defects. Before you level the ceiling for painting (after plastering), you can find a lot of cracks, places with peeling plaster and other unpleasant things. And all because you were once too lazy to properly clean the surface ...
If it is necessary to apply a layer thickness of more than 2-3 centimeters, it is necessary to reinforce the surface. To do this, use a steel reinforcing mesh or sickle. An assembly sickle is laid when sealing joints of gypsum-fiber or drywall sheets so that cracks do not form after the putty dries. Since it is quite difficult to level the ceilings with the help of a reinforcing mesh, it is better to worry about reliable assistants in advance.
After the putty has completely dried, the surface is primed. It is advisable to choose a primer with deep permeability. We do not recommend using cheap ones, since in some cases they contain so much water that the composition begins to crack very much when dried. For work, two types of spatulas should be taken: narrow (for a set of material) and wide (for spreading over a large area). But only with specific sizes will have to decide on your own.
We hope you learned how to level the ceilings yourself!
