Construction History

The modern shrine is located on the territory of the former village of Borovetsky, which arose at the beginning of the XVIII century. Here was a man’s monastery, which was burned during the uprisings and was no longer restored. Later, in 1829, a stone church was built here, which became the center of spiritual life. Moreover, the temple played the role of a school. Within its walls, peasant children were taught literacy.

Almost 50 years after this date, the Ascension Cathedral began its history. Naberezhnye Chelny then was already quite a lively territory. Therefore, it was decided to build another temple on the outskirts. Construction work began in 1872. In place of the old stone church, a new shrine was erected. Construction continued for 10 years. This project was financed by one of the most famous writers of that time - Dmitry Stakheev. This man worked in the genre of travel essays and served as editor of prestigious magazines and newspapers.

Mix of cultures

In 1882, the first, left side of the complex was opened. It was consecrated in the name of the righteous Demetrius of Solunsky. This saint from ancient times was considered the patron saint of the Slavic people. Later completed the right aisle. He was named after the Exaltation of the Cross.

The work ended only in 1889. Thus began the Ascension Cathedral. Naberezhnye Chelny was now proud of another unique temple.

The house of God is decorated in an eclectic style. This style combines several of the most popular architectural trends, including neo-Gothic, neo-Russian and neo-Moorish styles. The structure itself was tall and rather large.

According to records of pre-revolutionary times, about 2,000 people went to the cathedral. These were residents of the village of Borovetskoye and three close farms.

Stubborn inhabitants

The sanctuary of the village of Borovets gave power to the collective farm. An electric mill was placed under the altar. In connection with the operation, the structure was very damaged. When the room became unnecessary, it was left, and it began to fall apart.

During the perestroika period, attitudes toward religion began to change. In 1980, local residents turned to the authorities with a request to return the temple to them, but then they were refused. But Orthodox people did not give up and sent letters to different authorities.

The efforts were crowned with success. In 1989, work began on the reconstruction of this shrine. This was a new page in history, which began the Ascension Cathedral (Naberezhnye Chelny).

The appearance of this architectural monument of republican significance was formed in the 1990s. Unfortunately, the primary style could not be reproduced.

Three more rings later added. In parallel, they were engaged in facing the room. From the basics they put together a mosaic and painted murals.

Once again, the Ascension Cathedral (Naberezhnye Chelny) became a unique architectural structure.

Funds for the restoration of the shrine were collected by the whole people. Despite the fact that the repair was incomplete, the laity asked on the bright holiday of the Orthodox world - Christmas - to hold a service. This event happened back in 1990.

In the summer of 1995, a small baptismal church was built, which was consecrated in honor of Ksenia of Petersburg. Nearby are outbuildings. Another highlight is the existing library. There is also a church shop where everyone can buy spiritual literature, icons and other religious things.
