Before you start gluing vinyl wallpapers, you need to find out what this material is. Release wallpaper on the basis of non-woven or paper. The material is dense, non-standard and varied texture, allows you to hide many wall defects.
Features of vinyl wallpaper decoration
Externally vinyl wallpaper for walls Really chic, but when wet, they tend to stretch out in width, so they should not be heavily glued. Although there is a second option, when only the wall is treated with glue, leaving the wallpaper dry. These points are indicated in the instructions from the manufacturer.
When gluing strips, you need to gently press them to the surface, while removing bubbles and irregularities. They are glued butt-on, overlap is unacceptable. The wallpaper is too thick, and the edges will be very obvious. The glue needed is specialized, designed specifically for vinyl wallpaper.
Subtleties of choice
When buying, you should take into account the fact for which room the vinyl wallpaper is intended. If this is a kitchen, then embossed ones are not recommended, because patterns can accumulate dust. It is optimal to choose smooth ones - in case of contamination, they can be wiped with a damp cloth.
Silk screen printing is suitable for pasting the living room and bedroom. Its surface is protected from burnout, so the original color will remain for many years. Non-woven wallpaper is recommended for gluing in active rooms, for example, in the hallway. They are durable, wear-resistant, easy to wash.
Wall preparation
Before sticking vinyl wallpapers, the surface must be carefully prepared:
- Remove old wallpaper using a spatula and water.
- Check the surface of the walls. To do this, you can use tape. You need to stick it on the wall, sharply pull it away and look at the wrong side. If the remains of the previous finishing material are visible, then the surface is poorly prepared.
- It is good to putty and smooth out the existing cracks, then walk on them with soil or glue of a thick consistency.
- Carry out the treatment using a mold preventive compound.
- Check the walls for humidity. You can use this method - stick a plastic bag over the wall with tape overnight. In the morning, check the contents from the inside - the presence of droplets on cellophane indicates a poorly dried surface.
- If the vinyl wallpaper will be glued to a plastic or smooth surface, it must be sanded.
Important! Wallpaper should be glued in a closed room, drafts are unacceptable. Therefore, it is worth closing the windows and turning off the available devices (air conditioning or fan). It is not recommended to stick new wallpapers over old ones.
Preliminary preparation of wallpaper
If the wallpaper was not checked during the purchase, then you should check the entire batch before you start cutting them. Pay attention to the numbers (they must match), pattern and color. If everything fits together, you can open the first roll.
After measuring the height of the canvas is cut. To cut the wallpaper with a pattern, the stripes must be combined and only then cut to size. With an uneven ceiling line, the strips are cut with the allowance of a few centimeters.
Glue preparation
The glue intended for vinyl-based wallpapers differs in composition from other adhesive masses. It has an impregnation that protects wall coverings from fungus.
Wallpaper glue in finished form can be stored for 10 days. In the process of drying, a light transparent film forms on it. Glue does not harm human health. It has good adhesion.
When diluting the adhesive with water, pay attention to the instructions and proportions, mix well and let the glue swell. Apply the mixture evenly on the wallpaper and leave it on for 5 minutes so that it is better saturated. When applying, special attention should be paid to the joints - with a lack of glue, they can disperse after drying.
Vinyl Wallpapering Technique
Wallpaper sticker
According to the instructions, the first strip should be started from the window. Pasting should be with a partner. One, standing on the stairs, puts the canvas with the upper edge to the wall under the ceiling. The second, standing below, supports the end of the canvas and combines the edge with a vertical line previously drawn on the wall.
The strip is pressed against the wall and using a brush displaces the existing air bubbles. Do this from top to bottom, moving from the center to the edges of the strip. If the glue protrudes beyond the edges, you can wipe it with a clean rag. The excess allowance at the bottom is carefully cut with a knife.
Pasting corners
It is strongly not recommended to combine two canvases in the corner. In order to glue the corner qualitatively, you should stick the whole strip and overlap at an angle of up to 5 centimeters. Joints tightly pressed to the surface, for a strong grip.
How to glue wallpaper for the battery
Correctly stick vinyl wallpaper behind the battery to a depth of 20 centimeters. To make them comfortable to press, use a narrow roller on a long handle. Alternatively, you can paint the wall behind the battery in a color identical to the color of the wallpaper.
Skirting board and ceiling
If the skirting board was not removed during operation, then when gluing the strip, its end is inserted into the gap between the skirting board and the wall. If the allowance is too long - it should be cut. But ideally, skirting boards are pre-removed, and after pasting are installed back.
How to paste over the area of sockets and switches
Before pasting, de-energize the room, remove the switches and sockets in the room. When gluing strips at the locations of the electric points, marks are made. After the glue dries, these places are carefully cut through, after which the sockets and switches are replaced.
