Drywall is very popular for several decades. Light and environmentally friendly sheets are actively used in the process of repair and construction of various structures. Often the material is used to level surfaces. Gypsum plasterboard lining creates an ideal base for the most whimsical and demanding finishes. And how to plaster walls with plasterboard, you can find out from our article.
Methods for installing drywall boards
There are several ways to install sheets on walls. The selection of a suitable option depends on the purpose of the work. In the process of wall cladding, the master can use the following methods of fixation:
If you decide to plaster the walls of the house with drywall in order to level the surface, you can use any option. When the design provides for wall niches and shelves, only frame technology is used.
If we talk about the quality of work and the reliability of the structure, it is better to give preference to frame assembly. To use this method, you need to assemble a base from metal profiles, onto which sheets will subsequently be fixed. However, it should be noted that the thickness of such a cladding reaches 4-5 centimeters, which negatively affects the usable area of โโthe room.
When the room is already small, give preference to the glue fixing method. It will maximize the preservation of the parameters of the room.
How to calculate materials and choose suitable varieties?
When choosing GKL sheets, pay attention to the fact that they are of several types. Namely:
- standard type;
- moisture resistant;
- refractory.
If the work will be carried out in a normal living room, you can use standard products.
Homeowners who are wondering whether it is possible to sheathe walls with drywall in the bathroom should choose moisture-resistant varieties. They are actively used for decorating bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms with a specific climate. You can distinguish them by a greenish tint.
When it is necessary to protect surfaces near heating appliances, it is advisable to purchase refractory drywall. It is painted pink, marked with the mark "GKLVO".
The number of sheets you need is calculated quite simply. Calculate the total area of โโthe walls in the room, subtract the area of โโwindows and doors from the resulting figure. Divide the final result by the area of โโone gypsum board plate. By the way, a standard sheet has a length of 2.5 to 3 meters and a width of 1.2 meters.
So that in the process of work it does not turn out that the material is a little lacking, make a small supply. To do this, multiply the total number of sheets by a value of 1.2.
Tools for independent work
Before you ask yourself how to plasterboard walls properly, check that you have all the necessary tools. Keep in mind that the list of fixtures varies depending on the sheet fixing method you use.
To fasten plates without a frame, you will need:
- construction knife;
- electric jigsaw;
- roulette;
- level;
- rubber mallet;
- drywall sheets;
- gypsum based adhesive;
- putty knife;
- container for mixing glue.
To fix the sheets to the frame, you will additionally need metal profiles, a grinder with a diamond disk, a screwdriver, self-tapping screws, a puncher or a drill. To process the seams, purchase a package of finishing gypsum putty and a serpyanka tape.
Where to start: surface preparation
Wall cladding with drywall sheets begins with preliminary preparation of the base. To begin with, all elements that may interfere with the work are removed from the surface.
To properly plaster the walls in the house (both brick and wooden type), remove all the old trim. If work is carried out on a wood surface, fill all cracks and seams with insulation material, treat the walls with an antiseptic compound.
Concrete and brick substrates are cleaned of dirt and dust. If the walls are not strong, there are falling off elements on them, remove all weak parts. When using the skeleton method, such careful preparation is not required, but it is better to process the surface from the fungus and insects.
If there are several layers of plaster on the wall, which was applied at different times, be sure to remove the composition, since over time it will certainly begin to fall off. This can even affect the frame structure.
Adhesive mounting
Fixing sheets on glue is a fairly simple process, but it requires careful preparation of the substrate. If you made mistakes at the previous stage, it will be very problematic to dock the edges of the sheets.
How to sheathe walls with drywall without a frame? First you need to cut the sheets. This is done as follows:
- Using a tape measure and a pencil, a marking is applied to the plate, indicating the cut line.
- Under the drawn line is a wooden beam or rail.
- A long ruler or plaster rule is applied to the drawn strip. A sharp construction knife is held along the tool.
- With a sharp movement of the hands, they press on the rest of the plate. Thus, an unnecessary segment breaks off, the cut is smooth.
- Using a planer, you can clean the end face of the trimmed plate.
Now you need to determine which side of the sheet to place against the wall. Find the manufacturer's mark on the product, this part will be considered the back.
Next, the sheet is laid on the floor (the wrong side up) and the adhesive is applied to it. The prepared mixture is filled with a spatula, placed on the gypsum board with small cakes, in increments of 20-25 cm. The glue is applied around the perimeter of the plate and in its center.
The product is lifted from the floor and pressed against the wall. To glue evenly distributed under the stove, it must be pressed evenly from all sides. To do this, it is better to work with an assistant. Thus sheathe all the walls in the room.
Marking the walls under the frame
For wall cladding on the frame, you will need profiles. UD type galvanized products are installed on the side walls and floors. To fix the sheets on wooden walls, you can use slats of the same material.
To understand how to properly plaster wooden walls with plasterboard, it is enough to consider the standard instructions for assembling the frame. The difference in the works lies only in the fact that the materials of the frame and the base itself are treated with antiseptic compounds.
Also pay attention to the fact that experts do not recommend using a wood frame in unheated rooms. Such a base is subject to high humidity and temperature changes, which can lead to its deformation.
To mark the wall, step back 4 cm from the edge of the floor and ceiling, make marks along the entire wall. Between the designated points, pull the rope, check the horizontal. Using dowels and a punch, fix the guide profiles above the floor and under the ceiling.
Frame Assembly Technology
When understanding the question of how to properly plasterboard walls, pay special attention to the assembly technology of the base. The durability of the design depends on the quality of the work.
Work as follows:
- Install horizontal guides. We are talking about slats that are fixed after marking.
- Insert vertical jumpers into the guide rails. Purchase CD profiles for this purpose. Both of their edges must be installed in horizontal slats.
- Set the first bar at the edge of the wall. Fix it with self-tapping screws for galvanized products.
- After 40-60 cm, install the second jumper. Postpone the distance not from the edge of the profile, but from its center point.
- In this way, fix the jumpers along all the walls.
To mount the frame as reliable as possible, use suspensions made of perforated metal. Bend the slats so that they are in the shape of the letter "P". Place such fasteners between each profile and the wall. Fix the suspensions with metal screws.
At the end of the work, check the evenness of the frame using the building level or plumb. If errors are found, make the necessary adjustments.
In cases where the frame is assembled from wooden battens, the fixing of the base elements can be carried out using nails. The step of the crate remains within 40-60 cm.
How to plaster walls with plasterboard: technology for mounting sheets on a base
The fastening of the GVL sheets is carried out at the locations of the profiles. For this purpose, it is recommended to use self-tapping screws made of hot metal, the length of which is 3.5 cm.
It is most convenient to carry out this work with an electric screwdriver. The product is applied to the base and fixed with fasteners. Strongly screw in the screws is not recommended. The hat should not protrude above the surface of the sheet, while it is not allowed to recess it deeper than the cardboard layer.
The installation step of the self-tapping screw is 100-150 mm. Fasteners are screwed around the perimeter of the plate and in the center. In this way, the entire frame is sheathed.
Drywall joints: specialist advice
We described how to plasterboard wooden walls with your own hands (as well as brick and concrete surfaces). Now we will pay attention to how to extend the operation of such structures.
Experienced craftsmen advise always to embroider the seams between the sheets, as cracks may begin to appear in the area of โโuneven sections. For this, a clerical knife is used. It is placed at an angle of 45 degrees and the edge of each sheet is cut. As a result, the width of the outer edge of the seam should be within 1 cm.
Next, the joints are filled with finishing putty. All seams are pasted over with a serpentine tape, after which the surface is primed and completely primed. If the factory edges of the sheet are joined on your wall, this work is not necessary.
Features of work in wooden buildings
Wall cladding with GKL sheets in brick buildings can be carried out immediately after the construction of the building. But before sheeting the wooden walls with drywall, the building needs to be given time to shrink. In most cases, finishing is only started after 1 year.
Before facing the surface you need to insulate. Fill joints with tow or sealant. Further, the walls and all elements are treated with an antiseptic. Only after this is the finish done.
To summarize
If you decide to independently plaster the walls and ceiling with plasterboard, decide which method of work is best for you. Many people prefer adhesive technology, referring to the ease of work. However, in this case, more effort goes into preparing the foundation.
When the walls of the building are not smooth, it is more advisable to use a frame. Using it, the work will be performed as efficiently as possible.
