A screen partition is a great invention. In the living room or bedroom, it can bring a lot of benefits, and being executed in the tone of the environment, it can also become a stylish element of decor. Behind the screen you can quickly change clothes (even with guests in the house), retire for reading and relaxing. They divide the room into separate zones, block the crib of the child, use it as a backdrop for home photo shoots.

Of course, many ready-made screens are sold. On the other hand, making such an accessory with your own hands is not at all difficult. We offer you a small workshop "Screen DIY". In this case, you will enjoy the process of creativity and, importantly, the thing is exactly to your taste. When creating its drawings are practically not required - this design is not so complicated.

do-it-yourself screen master class

Master class "Screen DIY". Easiest option

For work, we’ll stock up with ready-made shelving side racks, acrylic enamel in a pleasing color (black will look especially stylish) and a brush, a pair of long piano hinges (about 17 cm each) or larger door hinges (about 6 pieces) and felt or metal glides for chairs as well as a cloth.

From tools, take care of the presence of a hammer, scissors, a screwdriver with screws, an iron and a stapler.

Initially, enamel vertical struts are covered. Then, cloths are cut out from the fabric in the planned number (for example, there will be three of them). On the upper and lower edges we leave as allowances about 10 cm, on the sides - about two. All of them are tucked and ironed.

The fabric unfolds on a flat surface down "face" and is stretched tightly. A crossbar-rack is placed on top, wrapped with the edge of the fabric, which should then be turned inside out and well secured with brackets. Then the stretched fabric is attached and fixed at the bottom. The operation is repeated for the remaining details of the screen in the same sequence.

Racks are connected by piano or door hinges, then thrust bearings are attached to the legs. That’s all - a simple screen is ready!

screen partition

Master class number 2. The option is more complex

Now another master class. The do-it-yourself screen in this case is performed in a more complex technique, requiring some skills from the home master. The design of our partition is a few hinged frames. Filled frames can be anything. In this case, we suggest pulling on the frames with your own hand-painted fabric. But first, we take care of the support base.

Having decided on the dimensions (height and width), we procure the required number of wooden battens. Their cross section can be chosen, say, 6 x 2 cm. If you are at a loss with the width, we will show you: the optimal size is about 65 cm. Each frame has to be assembled with glue, for which special grooves are cut at the ends. They are marked on the slats in width.

Using a hacksaw, we saw through the marking to half the depth, select wood with a chisel. We assemble the frames, planting on carpentry glue, fix the clamps of the connection. We attach door hinges to the upper and lower parts of the frames.

Go to the decor

Now we will deal with the fabric, which we will fill the gaps of the screen. We apply a pattern (for example, flowers) to a plain material using a stencil. If you could not come up with your own ornament, the template can always be found in different sources. The stencil is cut with a knife for wallpaper or a scalpel.

In the case when a children's screen is being made, you can decorate it with animals with your own hands or with any "cartoon" motifs.

We dip a small roller into the textile paint that we bought in advance and roll the fabric on the stencil. It does not matter if the edges of the flowers come out slightly blurry. Each time we lay the sheet with the stencil on the fabric in an arbitrary direction, so the picture will come out more picturesque. In addition, the fabric can be additionally decorated with elements sewn on top (soft fabric colors to match, for example, gauze).

The fabric is pulled onto the frame and secured with a stapler. It is possible to draw a screen from the inside out with platbands from thin fiberboard strips. By the way, it is not necessary to fill the canvas of the screen with fabric. Instead, you can insert into the frames sheets of fiberboard or thin plywood (or even very thick cardboard), pre-glued with wallpaper to match the walls or, on the contrary, contrasting. Just be careful not to get too variegated.

how to make a screen for a room

Japanese-style screen partition

In China and Japan, screens as an interior have always been given importance. According to the postulates of Buddhism, a person should not be surrounded by too much material - massive furniture and so on. Therefore, even in the rich homes of these countries things were observed at least, and light screens, painted in exquisite technique, served as one of the main points of the situation.

How to make a screen for a room in the Japanese style? We offer you to make such an elegant portable partition in one of two options - with and without legs. You will need light bars with a cross section of 5 x 2 cm, suitable fabric, furniture hinges, decorative cord, clamps, glue, a hammer with a chisel, a hacksaw, paint or varnish with a brush, a screwdriver (and preferably a screwdriver), as well as a number of screws and furniture corners. In addition, store sandpaper and a measuring tool.

Process technology

The bars are marked and cut into longer and shorter segments for the vertical and horizontal sides of the wings. The number of wings in such screens is traditionally from 6 to 8, but you can take another quantity.

We continue our master class. A self-made screen without legs is made quite simply. At the ends of the bars we make cuts to a depth of half their thickness (about 1 cm). With a chisel, we select the wood by hitting it with a hammer.

Having thus processed both ends of each plank, we put them into rectangular frames, smearing gaps before this with glue. Before it dries, the compound is fixed with clamps. From the inside to the frame, furniture corners are installed for strength.

Another variant

If it is planned to make a screen on the legs, a small distance is left under them from the lower edge of each vertical bar, cuts for joints are made higher. The upper ends of the strips can protrude in the same way, but you can make them the same as in the first case. The rest of the frame masters in the same way.

Then the frame is "brought to mind" - polished, varnished or simply painted. Finished doors, interconnected by hinges, are a folding accordion.

When cutting fabric into rectangular canvases, allowances for processing the edges of about 2 cm are left, which should be hemmed along the entire perimeter and holes should be made (however, you can limit them to only two opposite sides). Fasten the fabric to the frame through the decorative cord threaded into these holes. Alternatively, you can take eyelets or decorative eyelets. Additionally, the screen is decorated with painting or applique.

Screen for home puppet theater

Arrange a puppet theater at home - what could be more wonderful? Its obligatory element - a puppet screen - is mastering with its own hands without much difficulty. If you have little space, its floor version can be replaced with a desktop one. Parts are sawn from fiberboard (they must first be drawn, having agreed on all sizes). The ends are carefully sanded.

Our parts can be connected on ribbons or ribbons, for which holes must be provided at the edges. Before that, it is advisable to paint them in the same color (for example, white - it will be elegant and beautiful). If the child undertakes to help you, take paints only on a water basis - they are easier to wash off.

Fabric for the screen can be taken in the most unthinkable colors - the more colorful, the better. The frame should not just be wrapped, but sew removable covers on it - because from time to time they will have to be washed. The "roof" (you can make it triangular in shape) can be decorated with perky multi-colored cloves - as in a real puppet theater. The screen for the theater with your own hands is ready!
