Every driver knows that a car muffler is a necessary and important part of any type of motor vehicle. During engine operation, fuel combustion and exhaust gas occur. For this, a special pipe system is used in cars, which runs from the engine to the end of the body. One of the significant elements of this design is the silencer resonator.
Elements that make up the car muffler
The design is presented in the form of the following components:
- exhaust manifold
- receiving pipe
- combustion afterburning catalyst,
- silencer resonator
- muffler.
If there is an unpleasant "growl", the car owner should check for serviceability every component part of this system. It should also be noted that with a large burnout of the muffler, the exhaust sound also increases.
Thus, the silencer is responsible for reducing the sound of the exhaust, and it also prevents the formation of a large resistance in relation to the exhaust exhaust. Otherwise, the cylinders will begin to fill up, which will ultimately lead to a loss of power and incomplete combustion.
Silencer Types
- Muffler resonator type. This device uses confined spaces located near the pipe and attached to it due to existing holes. Usually in one such case two different compartments are concentrated. These spaces are also divided among themselves. Thus, each such hole is a silencer resonator, which contributes to the excitation of oscillations of its frequency. This frequency is quickly canceled when it spreads. That is why such a silencer device is used as a preliminary element, occupying the first position in the entire exhaust system. In addition, the silencer resonator does not show much resistance to the resulting flow, due to which the cross section does not decrease.
- Reflectors. The silencer housing accommodates acoustic mirrors that reflect sound waves. If using these mirrors you create a certain maze, then a faint sound will be heard at the output.
- The pistol silencer is designed in a similar way. However, this design of the muffler is considered more advanced. Usually this element is used as a terminal.
- Absorber. This device absorbs acoustic vibrations using any porous material. For example, if you direct the sound into the mineral wool, then its fibers will oscillate. In the process of friction, sound vibrations will be transformed into heat. This principle of operation allows, without reducing the cross-section of the pipeline, the entire design of the gas exhaust system. And despite the fact that the silencer resonator is not used here, the flow resistance and noise reduction will be minimal. For this reason, factory mufflers use most often combined systems, due to which there is a significant reduction in noise with minimal flow resistance.
