Natalyin day September 8th. History of the Holy Martyrs Natalya and Hadrian

Once this beautiful name was very popular and stood in the first place next to such a name as Elena. Today, however, it is losing ground significantly, which is certainly regrettable. Few people think about his translation, which sounds very amazing. Natalyin is celebrated on September 8, the history of this holiday is unusual, but more on that later. So, Natalia (or Natalia) is a Russian name that has Latin roots from natalis (native), and was formed at the time of the beginning of the revival of Christianity. The modern version of the meaning of the name is "blessed, Christmas, born in Christmas." On Natalyin's day (September 8), her pious husband Adrian is usually remembered. The story of their life is quite interesting.

The couple lived around the beginning of the fourth century in the city of Nicodemia (Vifa region, Asia Minor). Andrian was a real pagan and was in the official service of the emperor Makimian Galerius himself (reign from 305 to 311), who was a fierce persecutor of Christians. Adrian's wife, Natalia, was a secret Christian. Not far from their city in the cave from the Roman soldiers hid several dozen Christians, who were then caught, brutally tortured and sacrificed to the pagan gods.

Holy martyrs

Adrian witnessed all these terrible tortures. He was surprised by the immense patience and smile on his lips that the captives endured all the bullying and torture. Under this impression, Adrian questioned them about God. And during this conversation, the grace of God touched his good soul, and suddenly he realized the divine truth. Then Adrian told the scribes to write his name next to these Christian martyrs, because he also wants to become one of them and is also ready to die for Christ. Then the guards threw him into prison and chained him. At that time he was 28 years old.

Natalia is a martyr

When Natalia learned this news about her husband, she was filled with joy and immediately rushed to his prison, began to kiss his shackles, encourage him and talk about eternal bliss in the Kingdom of Heaven. She also asked him, when he appeared before the Lord, to implore Him that she would have the same great fate, so that later in blissful eternity they would never be separated.

When the death row was announced to the prisoners, Adrian was allowed to go home so that he would inform his wife about it. Natalia, seeing her husband returning home, was frightened, thought that he had renounced Christ and had not opened the door of the house for him. Then he again returned to the executioners, who led him and other Christians and put to terrible martyrdom. But before that they had their arms and legs broken. Saint Adrian died with other Christians as martyrs in 304.

Saint Adrian

He joyfully betrayed the soul to his Lord. When their bodies soon began to be burned in a special furnace, it went out, a severe thunderstorm began, and lightning flashed, which, as retaliation to the sinners, killed several executioners.

Then, since Natalia was young, rich and beautiful, the thousand-captain of the Roman army wanted to marry her . She could not imagine this and began to pray for death. Once in a dream, her husband Adrian appeared to her, who warned her that she would be with him soon. After a while, she died on the grave of her husband. With her mental suffering, she also earned a martyr's crown.

On Natalyin, the day of September 8 (August 26) is also honored by her husband, the blessed Adrian. The holy relics of Natalia are in Milan in the Basilica.

Now, Orthodox people pray to these martyrs for a happy marriage. It was with this icon that Catherine II blessed the marriage of her son.

Signs

Since September 8 is Natalyin’s day, signs on this day are especially honored, because in the old days Adrian and Natalya were called Ovsyanitsy Day and, according to tradition, they started to mow oats on that day, and then the housewives cooked jelly and baked pancakes from it. The fiber was kneaded on sour milk or on water with honey, and the following words were sentenced: "Natalya carries oat pancake, and Adrian is oily in the pot."

Then the housewives treated those dishes to those workers who brought the first sheaf of oats. He was placed in the red corner of the hut under the images. And then, having tasted the treats, the workers got up and, having thanked the owners, went to work in the field.

According to signs, if on Natalyin the day of September 8, the morning was cold, then we should expect the onset of early winter. If the leaf of oak and birch has not fallen, one must also prepare for a harsh winter. Or if the crows do not sit in one direction, this day the weather will be calm, and if they sit close to the tree trunk and their heads are in the same direction, you should wait for windy weather.

On Natalyin's day (September 8), the morning can be very cool, because by that time the days had already decreased by about three hours. The people said that Peter and Paul (July 12) reduced the hour, the prophet Ilya (August 2) fired two, but Andrian and Natalya fired three.

Natalyin Day - September 8: Congratulations

Since our Orthodox people love every kind of Christmas time and festivities, they also celebrate this day in a special way. And, of course, any representative of this name is waiting for congratulations on Natalyin on September 8th. They can be expressed in different forms, but they sound best in beautiful and wise poems.

One poet wrote very interesting lines: “But I love Natalyin’s day, let Tatyana forgive me ...” With this fateful name, the classics have their own memories. Pushkin's wife, still lying in bed in lace, had already received congratulations since the morning. One by one, her family and friends brought congratulations to her: who is a velvet box with jewelry, who is a bonbonniere with chocolates, and who is the tray with greeting cards.

Leo Tolstoy also created a captivating image of Natasha in his great work “War and Peace”. Yes, it seems to be just a name, but how much everything carries in itself - the head will spin!
