When using modems of any type, quite often a failure occurs with the number 633 (connection error). And although today the use of modems, to put it mildly, is not up-to-date, nevertheless, for some systems, such a connection may be relevant (for example, when starting the modem of a mobile device in order to gain access to the Internet from a computer). The problem can be fixed quite simply.
Error 633 (modem in use or not configured): the essence of the problem
It is believed that the failure is mainly due to obsolescence of the maintenance software (drivers) and incompatibility with the system of management utilities.
In some cases, error 633 can occur only because the COM port, which is intended for software connection of the modem, is busy. Thus, three main solutions to this problem are seen.

First of all, pay attention to the installed drivers. In the simplest case, if error 633 appears, you need to not only try to update the drivers through the "Device Manager", but also completely remove the device from the system.
After that, you should not set the installation of drivers from the Windows database, as the system installs, as it seems, the most suitable driver. If there is a companion disk, it is better to use it. But to install the latest versions, it is customary to use automated search and update programs like Driver Booster or even DriverPack Solution, which are able to identify devices installed in the system and access the manufacturer’s resources on the Internet to download the most current driver versions directly.
Removing incompatible software
Sometimes error 633 can occur due to the fact that additional control utilities are simply incompatible with the operating system.
They naturally need to be removed. This is done through the program installation and removal section in the standard “Control Panel”. If the installation date of such software at the first connection is known, you can simply sort the programs by this criterion. And it is desirable to perform the removal in safe mode, using in most cases at the system startup the F8 key.
If the user does not know exactly what needs to be removed, you will have to turn to disabling unnecessary services through the same section, but with a choice of system components. In this case, we are talking about ISS services, where you must first deactivate calls to the FTP server and website management tools.
Port Configuration Issues
But sometimes in cases where error 633 occurs, it happens that at the time of connection the corresponding COM port is occupied by another device or software.
To get rid of this failure, you need to free the port. This is done at the initial stage by removing all existing connections in the network and Internet section. After that, you need to go to the "Device Manager" and when you click on the network adapter to use the context menu in which the property string is selected. On the “Advanced” tab in the port settings, you should change the port number from the first to the third or from the second to the fourth (you cannot change the odd port to even port).
Next, you need to reboot the system and again go into the properties of the installed modem, corresponding, for example, to a VPN connection, and then use the modem polling tool call. In most cases, this method corrects the situation when error 633 appears.
It remains to add that these are the simplest methods and solutions, since in each case the problem may have different causes. However, not to mention the accompanying software, you first need to pay attention to the ports and drivers.
