Despite changes in programs and the introduction of new standards, a classical university diploma continues to be synonymous with quality education. Especially when it comes to the oldest Russian university, which recently celebrated its 290th anniversary. The Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University is a fundamental natural science education that allows it to further realize itself in the professional field.
From the history of the institute
The official date for the creation of the chemical faculty of Leningrad State University is considered to be 1929. His predecessor was the chemical department, organized at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1916.
The first years for the faculty became quite turbulent: in connection with the reorganization, a year later, in 1930, the faculty was closed, and its base was transferred to the Chemical Engineering Institute. However, two years later it was not only restored, but also included a research institute.
In the post-war years, the Department of Radiochemistry was founded at the faculty, which trained specialists for participation in atomic energy programs and the development of atomic weapons. In 1967, the first department of quantum chemistry in the Union appeared here.
A few years ago, the faculty acquired the status of the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University.
Institute Business Card
The credo of the institute today is a combination of classical university and practice-oriented education, the formation of fundamental and applied knowledge among students. The interdisciplinary approach (chemistry, physics, mechanics, biology, medicine) is declared the basis of the educational process.
The Institute implements programs at all the basic levels of higher and postgraduate education. There are also additional and elective programs.
The key focus has been and remains research work. In addition to the basic departments, scientific laboratories and thematic research groups work here. Since 2010, a system of internal grants for research and internships has been in place.
As a legal entity, the educational organization was registered in 2003 (TIN of the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University - 7801002274). Today, the main building of the institute is located in Peterhof.
The official address of the Institute of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University: University Avenue, 26.
Chairs
At present, the Institute has 14 main departments that carry out both educational and research activities.
Key areas of work of the departments:
- inorganic and general chemistry;
- analytical chemistry;
- chemistry of quantum processes and solids;
- colloid chemistry;
- organic chemistry;
- radiochemistry;
- laser materials science;
- high molecular weight compounds;
- chemistry of natural phenomena;
- kinetics and chemical thermodynamics;
- electrochemistry;
- chemistry of natural compounds and solids.
The Department of Organic Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University is one of the oldest. It was created in 1869, it was here that A.M. Butlerov once worked.
Undergraduate
The institute implements two programs at the undergraduate level: “Chemistry”, “Chemistry, Mechanics of Materials and Physics” (interdisciplinary).
For admission, you must submit the results of the exam in mathematics, the Russian language and chemistry. The average passing score at the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University is 195.
The training is organized within three thematic blocks: basic (chemistry and materials science), non-chemical natural sciences, humanitarian general education. The first takes up to 45% of the training load. It includes the study of analytical, inorganic, physical, colloidal, quantum chemistry, electrochemistry, radiochemistry, etc. Students can also choose one of the training profiles (basic, physicochemical, organic, analytical, inorganic) and special practical courses in advanced courses.
Master
The Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University has opened a set of studies for master's programs in “Physics, Chemistry, Materials Mechanics”, “Chemistry”, “Applied and Fundamental Aspects of Nanotechnologies and Materials”. Duration of study - 2 years.
As part of the preparation, students study special profile and psychological-pedagogical disciplines, a foreign language, undergo pedagogical practice and work on a master's thesis. The latter area takes up to 65% of the study time and is based on the results of research and experimental work. Therefore, upon admission, an individual lesson plan is formed for each student.
The Institute actively cooperates with the institutions of the Academy of Sciences, as well as foreign partners, which allows undergraduates to have internships in Finland, Spain, Germany, and the USA.
Graduate school
Choosing a scientific path, you can continue training in graduate school at the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University in the direction of "Chemical Sciences". Duration - 4 years. Training is provided on a budgetary and contractual basis. Admission is based on the results of the competition. Among the entrance tests are exams in chemistry and a foreign language.
Graduate students are entitled to exemption from military service for the duration of their studies and participate in the competition for personal scholarships.
In the process of study, it is necessary to pass a number of candidate exams:
- analytical chemistry;
- electrochemistry;
- high molecular weight compounds;
- physical chemistry;
- inorganic and organic chemistry;
- radiochemistry;
- colloid chemistry;
- chemistry of solids.
Scientific laboratories
In addition to the basic departments, the institute has three scientific laboratories: biomedical chemistry (interdepartmental), chemical pharmacology and cluster catalysis.
The first of these laboratories is divided into three groups (biotechnology, medicine, biological analysis). The main activity is research and practical application of polymer materials based on the principles of bio-recognition.
The Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology is responsible for the development of medical chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University. Laboratory staff are also involved in the design of biologically active substances.
In the laboratory of cluster analysis, research is being carried out in the field of nanochemistry, catalysis, macromolecular compounds and organic chemistry. Part of the work is carried out jointly with Moscow State University and the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Educational and extracurricular activities
Studies at the Institute are called rich reviews. This applies to the educational process, and to other areas of student life.
In addition to the main classes, each student chooses for himself elective courses to deepen knowledge. The courses take into account professional and regional specifics, the scientific interests of teachers and students, and the demands of the labor market.
A number of reviews on the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University are devoted to the organization of internships. This area is given special attention. Students can take a summer internship in the strategic product management department of a paper and pulp mill in Svetogorsk (paid) or try themselves in the public service (internship “Open Smolny”).
As part of extracurricular activities for students, a whole range of events is organized: festivals of creativity, contests of innovative developments, student balls, master classes, forums and meetings with interesting people.
Student organizations
A number of public organizations help to develop their abilities and find like-minded students at the Institute of Chemistry at St. Petersburg State University. In addition to the traditional trade union, students can become members of the student council, the scientific community, the council of young scientists, the editorial board of the Khimperator newspaper or the local branch of the D.I. Mendeleev.
The tasks of the SSS (scientific community) include acquaintance of students of the 1st-2nd year with the areas of work of the institute departments, familiarization with research practice. Meetings and presentations are regularly held with employees and graduate students of the departments. Members of the society take part in the organization of the chemical Olympiad and the All-Russian student conference on chemistry.
The activity of the Chemical Society is aimed at developing networking among young chemical researchers, supporting academic mobility, and enhancing joint development. The company holds contests, competitions, conferences, Mendeleev readings.
The Student Council takes care of improving the conditions of the educational process, supports student projects. Among his daily tasks: monitoring food quality, lobbying for questions on increasing scholarships, forming a student standard for the quality of education.
In general, reviews say that the institute really holds a high educational standard.
