Volgograd Medical University is the oldest higher educational institution of the city, it was founded in 1935 and then was called the Stalingrad Medical Institute. University History (1935-1941)
At the time the university was founded, there was only one faculty (medical) and eight departments in it. The first students were 172 people, which was significant for the then Stalingrad. 500,000 people lived in the city, of which only 800 had a medical education and could provide appropriate assistance to compatriots.
The organization of such a university was justified, which is why a number of highly qualified scientists were sent to Stalingrad. Gradually, the number of training places and specialties increased, and it became possible to form a large clinical base. In 1937, the first university students began working in the regional hospital, and three years later the institute formed such an important clinical base in almost all the necessary specialties.
University and World War II
In 1941, the life of the entire Soviet Union radically changed, but the medical institute in Stalingrad began to work twice as intensively as before. In 1941 alone, graduation amounted to more than 650 medical specialists. In parallel with basic training, teachers were engaged in the retraining of experienced physicians for work in hospitals.
In 1942, the front line came close to Stalingrad. As a result of the bombing of the city, the institute was partially destroyed, several teachers and students were killed. After the Battle of Stalingrad, students and teachers of the university took an active part in its restoration. The institute received tremendous help from its colleagues from other universities and the People's Commissariat of Health, doctors from all over the Soviet Union came to Stalingrad to restore the institution. The next graduation took place only in 1944.
Post-war history of the university
The normal working capacity of the institute was restored only after the end of World War II. In 1961, Stalingrad was renamed, the same fate befell the medical institute. Now the name of the city sounded like Volgograd. Volgograd State Medical University - this was the new name of the university. Previously, the educational institution was already renamed the Academy, but the status of the university gave the university a completely different position.
In the same year, the university received a separate room located on the Square of the Fallen Fighters, this allowed the university to timely fulfill the tasks assigned to it. A large number of new faculties appeared, separate scientific schools began to form.
