Socket 1366. Chipsets, motherboards and processors. Relevance, reviews of owners

The processor socket 1366 debuted in November 2007. Initially, this platform provided an uncompromisingly high level of performance and made it possible to solve all the current software problems at that time. It is its specifications and capabilities that will be considered in this material.

Briefly about this computing platform

As noted earlier, the computing platform 1366 socket under consideration appeared on the computer technology market about ten years ago. Such system units by default belonged to premium solutions.

On the basis of this computing platform, entry-level servers, gaming PCs, workstations and graphic stations were created. In each of these cases, the most stringent performance requirements were put forward, but at the same time, the cost of computer assembly faded into the background. Also, the reliability of computing systems was at a really high level.

It was the combination of these two factors that made it possible to create premium-level PCs by the standards of 2007-2010. The key innovations of the processor socket under consideration were the increased number of computing units, which now could reach 6 cores, and a redesigned memory controller. The latter was integrated into the CPU, supported the DDR3 memory type and is capable of working in three-channel mode.

All this in total provided a 15 percent increase in performance. In 2011, the LGA1366 processor socket was replaced by the LGA2011 processor socket.

A set of system logic. motherboards

Any 1366 socket motherboard is based on the X58, 5520 and 5550 system logic sets. The first of them is aimed at creating high-performance computers and supports only single-processor configurations. But at the same time, according to the manufacturer, the server chip of the Xeon 55XX line can be installed in the socket of such a system board.

The number of slots in such solutions is 6 pieces. In each of them, a 4 GB bracket can be installed, and in total this allows you to get 24 GB of RAM on the X58 motherboard.

Socket 1366 in this case, as previously noted, allows you to create ordinary computers with a high level of performance.

Motherboards based on 5520 and 5550 chipsets are aimed at implementing server PCs. They support multiprocessor configurations, and only Xeon 55XX series CPUs can be installed in their socket. In this case, the amount of RAM can increase significantly. For example, with a dual-processor layout, the amount of RAM will increase from 24 GB to 68 GB.

Basically, motherboards for LGA1366 are made in the ATX form factor. As a rule, this is a premium-level PC, and they have the appropriate equipment. The latter circumstance also requires the size of the ATX on the motherboard.

But recently, some Chinese manufacturers have already released solutions in microATX format. As experience shows, in this case there are problems with cooling, and such boards fail relatively quickly. Therefore, buying them is not recommended.

List of processor devices

Only two CPU models can be installed in socket 1366. The processors of the i7-9XX line are able to function on motherboards with the X58 chipset. Again, the largest amount of RAM in this case can be equal to 24 GB, and the chip itself is designed to operate in a single-processor mode. The number of computing units may be 4 or 6, and the logical flows on a given silicon substrate may be 8 or 12.

The second line of supported chips within the LGA1366 is the Xeon 55XX. These are server microprocessors. They are already most optimally used in conjunction with 5520 or even 5550 chipsets. In this case, the creation of multiprocessor configurations is allowed, and due to this, the performance of the computing system increases significantly.

Conclusion: relevance and reviews

On the one hand, socket 1366 debuted in the world of computer technology for a long time. Over the past ten years, he certainly managed to become obsolete and lose its relevance. But those features that were laid down in it by developers in 2007 still make this computing platform relevant.

The mere presence of a three-channel RAM controller allows such PCs to compete on an equal footing with the current flagships of Intel or AMD on an equal footing. Also, in terms of the number of cores, such CPUs are still relevant. Therefore, such PCs still cope with the software tasks assigned to them and it is still inexpedient to upgrade such computers.

But when assembling new high-performance computers, it is recommended to choose new LGA2066 or TR4 sockets. This is exactly what the owners of such system units indicate in their reviews on the Internet.
