St. Petersburg State University is officially recognized as the oldest university in Russia. Its structural divisions include more than 20 faculties, among which there is also a faculty of sociology. The educational programs offered by the university in this direction are described below.
Faculty structure: departments
The following departments function on the basis of sociology at St. Petersburg State University:
- cultural anthropology and ethnic sociology;
- sociology of political and social processes;
- applied and branch sociology;

Directions for undergraduate training
The following areas of undergraduate training are offered at the Faculty of Sociology:

- case studies in a digital society.
The period of study at the undergraduate program is 4 years. Admission is based on the results of a unified state exam in specialized subjects. Training is possible on a budgetary basis or on a contractual basis.
At the end of 2015, St. Petersburg State University was included in the QS Graduate Employability Ranking of Universities 2016 rating. Masters training areas
As part of the master's programs at St. Petersburg State University, students have the opportunity to receive two diplomas: Petersburg State University and a foreign partner university.
Within the framework of the Master's program in Sociology, St. Petersburg State University a program in English “International Sociology” is presented. Sociological students are taught in English by qualified teachers from Russia, as well as Germany (on the educational profile of European Societies) and the Republic of Korea (on the educational profile of Global Sociology: Comparative Perspectives). In this area, training is carried out in two profiles:
- Global sociology: comparative perspectives.
- European societies.
Also, in the magistracy of the Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University, the direction of training "Sociology in Russia and China" is presented. Training is conducted both in Russian and in English. Sociology in Russia and China is the first national higher education program to train specialists of the second stage of higher education - masters of sociology, who are able to conduct comparative sociological studies of the development processes of Russian and Chinese societies.
Faculty of Sociology, St. Petersburg State University: passing grades
In order to enter the bachelor's degree in Social Work at a budgetary place, an entrant in 2018 had to earn at least 82.33 points on average for each state exam. For admission on a contractual basis, it was enough on average for 1 exam to get at least 65.33 points. In 2018, 15 budget places were allocated, a total of 5 places with tuition fees were offered. The cost of training at the same time was 190 thousand rubles a year.
For admission to the direction “Sociological Studies in the Digital Society” of the Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University, applicants had to provide the exam results with scores of at least:
- 256 points for the budget base;
- 214 points for the contractual basis.
In total, fifteen budget places were allocated. The competition for 1 free place was over 14 people. Paid places were allocated 25. The cost of training is 203 thousand rubles a year.
Passing points in the direction of training "Sociology" of the Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University in 2018 amounted to the following values:
- 269 points for a free training foundation;
- 193 points for a basic training fee.
The competition for one budget place exceeded 19.8 people, all in all, 35 applicants were recruited. Paid places were allocated 25. Tuition: 203,000 rubles per year.
