After all, this has always been considered the most important condition for keeping an animal. Properly selected equipment will facilitate the process of getting used to it and help the owner to find a common language with him.
The purpose of ammunition
Nowadays, ammunition for horses is presented in a huge variety. Owners of animals do not experience a lack of it. A halter, bridle, chumbur, blanket and saddle are all horse harnesses. All these items can be purchased on the market or in a specialized store, or can be made independently.
Horse harness should be easy to repair and be universal when used in various types of work performed.
With your own hands you can make one of the harness items - a halter. Although the life of homemade halters is small, but the minimum cost will be spent on manufacturing. They are easier to wash and dry out much faster.
What is the halter for horses?
A device is considered a halter, which helps to accustom a horse to a person. This is a type of headband that is not a complete bridle. It is used to control the horse, cleaning, saddling, leading on occasion. Having put it on, it is more convenient to treat her in the pasture. At the same time, the animal's mouth remains free, which allows him to graze calmly. It consists of a capsule, chin, buccal and occipital straps.
Rope halter
To train especially sensitive horses, use this halter. It gently acts on the animal, which allows you to work with it. His round nodules produce pressure, acting on the skin of the horse, forcing her to turn his head to where the owner needs.
But before you make this part of the harness, you need to find out how the double knots fit correctly. They should be round in shape. Incorrectly tied will be flat and will produce pressure on a fairly large area of the horse's body.
Before you start knitting a double knot, you must first knit a simple one. In this case, you should ensure that it is not too tight. The end of the rope must be made parallel to the bottom loop for the first knot. In the middle, a second is tied. Having performed this manipulation, they are being pulled. They need to be pulled up to the same degree.
On both sides of the knot, two ropes are obtained that are parallel to each other. Knots are placed crosswise on top of the rope. As a result, you can get a knot similar to the letter X. Only having mastered this method of knitting, you can make a halter for the horse.
Sizing
An important question during the knitting process: how to find out the size of the halter? Accurate measurements must be taken from the horse. If you can’t remove them, you can do a little more, it will not be so scary.
You can also use a special table (see below), in which there are all measurements of the animal’s parameters, which will help to do all the work quickly and efficiently.
Making a rope halter
For production, both kapron rope and yacht rope are used. Since kapron is a more slippery material, it is more difficult to make a halter with it yourself.
According to the measurements taken from the table, sequentially, using one end of the rope, tie the usual 4 knots. Further in size, the rope folds into a loop, and a knot of the usual shape is tied , as when tying shoelaces. The length of the loop should be about 10 cm.
On both sides of her nasal nodes are tied. When you tie them, the halter will have two ropes of the same length parallel to each other, which are connected by these nodes. Then you should do the throat knot. Using the sizes indicated in the table, it is tied so that it is in the middle, at the same distance between the nasal nodes. On both sides you will get ropes of different lengths. This needs to be fixed.
The next action is tying a knot near the right ear of the animal. The halter should take on the proper look. According to the table, compare all sizes. They should be almost the same, the difference should not be big.
Next, you need to connect two long halter ropes into a regular knot. We get 2 loops whose length is 10-12 cm. To fully tighten it, you must first try it on a horse.
Ropes must be the same length. When using a rope made of synthetic material with a lighter, it is necessary to melt its ends. Then they can be tied with a strip of leather or left unbound.
A horse halter made of rope is considered finished. During fitting, the sizes are adjusted according to the head of the animal. In this case, the nodes are shifted in the desired direction (up or down). Having fitted them completely, they need to be tightened. If the halter will be used when riding, it is necessary that the distance from the horse's chin to the knot is approximately 10 cm.
Halter sewn from a braid or sling
Halter for horses can be made from strong braid. A sling is also suitable for this purpose. It is mandatory to use one metal ring, one belt with a buckle and one ring for the cupboard. When making a halter using a rigid sling in the place that will be under the animal’s chin, only one ring can be sewn. But when working with a horse at the roundabout, they are sewn in three.
The halter consists of two rings, different in diameter. One, of a small diameter (about 65 cm), is intended to be worn on the face of the animal, and the other, with a diameter of about 105 cm, is fastened with a buckle on the head, behind the ears. These rings are stitched together by three jumpers. Located along the cheeks have a length of 20 cm. And the jumper going under the chin has a length of 13 cm.
Manufacturing process
A sling or denim is cut into stripes. Then it doubles. Stitch the ends of the fabric strips together in the middle. So all belts are made. All necessary dimensions must be removed from the old model.
To make a halter, you need to take one part of the old waist belt with a buckle 15 cm long. The second part, with holes, should have a length of 55 cm. Ultimately, for sewing such an item of horse harness as a halter for horses, almost 3 m slings are needed.
Double the sling under the ganache, sew part of the belt so that its total length, which includes the length of the sling insert, is 105 cm.
To make a belt that will be located around the muzzle, the pattern of the slings is folded in half and stitched with a continuous one ring. A middle belt of the lower part is superimposed on this ring and in the middle of the sling insert, and a metal ring is laid from the muzzle. It is necessary to wrap the ends of the pattern so that they touch each other with an overlap, and sew up. At the junction of the sling and the belt, put one end of the cheek strap, and put the other on the continuous ring so that the distance to the middle belt is 13 cm, and sew it. The second cheek strap is also sewn. After all the operations, the halter for the horses will be ready.
This item of horse harness, made independently, is optionally decorated with braids, beads, monograms.
Precautionary measures
In halters it is convenient to train a horse, drive it and catch it. But they can be dangerous, as they have great strength. Clinging to a tree branch, a hook, even a horseshoe, a horse can be seriously injured, in the worst cases death. In the event of an unforeseen situation, the horse may die without being freed from the halter.
To ensure your horse is completely safe, you can use a bursting halter with a removable leather upper or insert. These parts are fastened with clasps. In the event of a large load, they break.
When using old nylon halters, a horse can be secured with a piece of thin rope. It is inserted near the buckle of the cheek strap. When loaded, it simply breaks, releasing the buckle. And the animal will quickly free itself from the halter.
