A few words about the history of the CHA

In 1956, it was decided to build two buildings in the capital, in one of which it was planned to place part of the Tretyakov Gallery's exposition, and the second - to transfer to the Union of Artists of the USSR for exhibitions and other events. Over time, the idea arose to develop a project of a single structure, which will accommodate both objects. It was successfully implemented by architects N. Sukoyan and Yu. Sheverdyaev, and in 1979, an exhibition of artists at the Central House of Artists and an exhibition of the State Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val opened their doors to the first visitors.

Demolition plans

In 2008, it became known about the project, according to which it was planned to build a multifunctional building in the form of cut fruit on the site of the Central House of Artists, which, in addition to the State Tretyakov Gallery exposition, was to accommodate: a hotel, high-level residential apartments and offices. A year later, Muscovites were informed that a 15-story “Orange” would not be built, instead a new complex would appear in the capital, the location of which would be Krymsky Val. The Central House of Artists, an exhibition of Russian and Soviet artists from 1920-1960 (part of the State Tretyakov Gallery), according to the new plan of the authorities, were to move to new buildings. At the same time, it was assumed that the construction created by N. Sukoyan and Yu. Sheverdyaev should be transferred to the investor. Fortunately, this plan was also not implemented, as the public defended the building of the Central House of Artists. Be that as it may, today the exposition of the Central House of Artists is located in the same place as before, and various interesting cultural events are held there.
