The central stadium of Volgograd is a municipal city property. Now it is the former home arena of the football club "Rotor". The stadium was built at the foot of the Mamaev Kurgan. In 2018, the World Cup is to be held at the sports arena. But for this, the former Central Stadium was subject to repair. But instead, it was decided that it would be more appropriate to build a new one with a different name on the site of the sports complex.
Stadium History
The authors of the first Central Arena of Volgograd were architects Gekker, Dynkin, Frenkel and Fialko. The construction of the central stadium (sometimes called the Stalingrad Luzhniki Stadium ) was begun in 1958. The arena was built by the whole world by professionals and ordinary students. The complex was to become the largest sports ground in the region. During the construction period and the first years of operation, the stadium was called the Volga.
According to the project, he was supposed to have an arena with stands for 35,000 people, a swimming pool built to international standards, and an athletics winter arena. Separately, it was planned to build 6 gymnasiums, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. As well as a yacht club and an additional small stadium with stands for 5,000 people.
The project of the stadium belonged to standard buildings, which were commissioned in other regions of the USSR. Since 1960, students of the Institute of Physical Education took a direct part in the construction of the sports facility. Near this educational institution the stadium is located.
It was considered the arena of the "Rotor". But in 2009, together with the football club, became the property of businessman Oleg Mikheev. Under the contract, the businessman was supposed to pay off all of Rotor's debts. But the stadium’s transfer to private ownership was met with sharp public indignation. And the prosecutor’s office began to verify the legality of the transaction. As a result, the sports complex became again the municipal property of the Volgograd region.

The last repair was started at the stadium ahead of the 2008 European Championship. It was assumed that partially the games will be held in Volgograd. But the competition was moved to another country. And the repair was suspended. Perhaps in 2018 the stadium will host the games of the world championship.
Reconstruction
In 2000, the question of reconstruction was raised, since Volgograd submitted an application to UEFA. Work at the Central Stadium began to boil, without waiting for a decision from the European Football Federation. Several sectors of the stands were demolished. But after learning that the application was rejected by UEFA, the repair was suspended. In memory of unfulfilled hopes there was a huge hole at the gate.
At the same time, Rotor lost its professional status and, together with them, the Central Stadium began to pass from hand to hand. The situation normalized only in 2010. First, the Rotor club was restored, then FIFA granted the application for the World Cup at the Central Stadium. Reconstruction was required again.
But it was decided not to repair the stadium, but to build a new one. In 2010, the dismantling of the arena began. And the sports complex was renamed “Victory”. Completion is planned in 2017. The stadium was designed for 45 thousand people. After the World Cup takes place in 2018, the arena will again be transferred to Rotor.
Farewell to the Rotor
The last match that the Central Stadium (Volgograd) saw was held between the local football club and Krasnoyarsk Yenisei.
