Gymnastics rings are one of the many equipment used in gymnastics. An interesting part of men's gymnastics is the exercises performed on the rings.
What are gymnastic rings?
This sports equipment consists of two rings made of solid material (high-quality Finnish plywood or plastic), mounted at a height on special cables.
Ring exercises are regular in the program of the Summer Olympic Games, and are also part of the gymnastics competitions in world and continental championships.
The exercises performed on the rings consist of dynamic and static elements: lifts, revolutions and twists. At the end of the exercise, an acrobatic jump is performed. Before starting the exercise, the athlete needs an assistant who sits him on the shell. To exercise on the rings, the athlete must be physically prepared.
It is also worth considering that the execution of static elements in terms of load is more complicated than dynamic ones. A static element is counted if it is held for 2 seconds or more. The most famous and complex static elements are:
- "Cross" - an exercise during which the gymnast must hang on the extended straight arms horizontally to the floor.
- “Airplane” - an element in which the gymnast’s hands are spread apart in different directions, and the body should be parallel to the rings.
- “Return plane” - equilibrium, during which the body should be in a horizontal plane with rings, while the arms are spread apart, the stomach to the ceiling, the back facing the floor.
Judges evaluate not only the complexity, but also the cleanliness of the execution of the elements, and the quality of the produced bounce.
Structural groups of elements made on rings:
1. Flywheel elements: twists back and forth, large revolutions, complex double revolutions forward and backward, and others.
2. Fly elements in a handstand (it should be held for about 2 seconds): rises swing forward and flip into a handstand, large revolutions forward and backward.
3. Fly elements that end with a static element: cross, high angle, horizontal stops.
4. Dynamic and static power elements: horizontal hangs, angles, horizontal stops, crosses, as well as power rises and lowerings.
