ZIL-4502: review, specifications

The ZIL-130 car is a true legend of the Soviet automobile industry. These trucks were used in all areas of the national economy. On the basis of the 130th, many modifications were created. One of these is the ZIL-4502. Its technical characteristics will be considered in our article today.

The car has been mass-produced since 1975. It differs from the 130th model with a dumping all-metal body and a shortened base. Has a tow hitch. Thanks to this, it can work with dump trailers with a total weight of up to 7 tons. Also, the 4502 model is often combined with the abbreviation MMZ. The fact is that the dump truck was produced at the Mytishchi Engineering Plant. With the collapse of the USSR, truck production was discontinued.

Design

The truck was ZIL-130. In fact, ZIL-4502 is no different from its "ancestor", with the exception of the tipper body. The cabin is still the same, which is put on all ZILs from the 62nd year. The main colors are blue and green. By the way, the radiator grill of many ZILs of the 4502nd model was white. The same pattern was practiced on lawns in the USSR. Headlights of the simplest form, turn signals and parking lights are located just above the head optics. On wide wings there is a repeater. The bumper, as is customary on all the trucks of that time, is metallic.

In front there are two massive tow hooks. The car has a high ground clearance and no less high location of the bumper itself. To get to the hood, you need to try pretty hard. Therefore, craftsmen made a small bandwagon. You can see it in the photo above. By the way, the clearance was 33 centimeters. This made it possible not only to carry out repair work in the absence of a lift, but also to safely move off-road. Recall, the truck was created for the national economy.

Salon

The cabin in the car is designed for three seats, including two passenger. Unlike the Lawn of those years (and this is the 53rd model), there is no common sofa. The driver's seat is separated from the passenger. The seat itself is devoid of any lateral and lumbar support. Traveling on this car over long distances was very difficult. There is no noise and thermal insulation in the cab.

In winter, it quickly cooled down, and a constant engine noise was heard along the way. There is no plastic trim inside. Doors and front panel are part of the cab and are made of bare metal. There is a solid rubber mat on the floor. By the way, craftsmen laid Soviet linoleum here. The instrument panel is quite archaic. The steering wheel has no adjustments. In the center of the panel is a small glove box with technical inscriptions. In general, the ZIL cabin was similar to the GAZonovsky one both in terms of comfort and the location of the controls.

Under the hood of the car was a gasoline inline engine with an upper valve arrangement. The power unit received the marking ZiL-157D. Unlike the 130th ZIL, a 6-cylinder engine was used on this dump truck.

Its working volume was 5.4 liters. The unit was deformed, due to which the factory compression was only 6.5 points. Moreover, the maximum power did not exceed 110 horsepower. The only plus of such a technical solution is the engine's suitability for low-octane fuel consumption. The car was designed for 72nd gasoline. Now it is difficult to find at ordinary gas stations. But there is no need to worry about fuel quality. ZIL "digests" any gasoline. Acceleration to hundreds was not regulated for obvious reasons, but the maximum speed was 90 kilometers per hour.

Transmission, carrying capacity, body

The truck was equipped with a manual gearbox. Its main difference is the lack of synchronizers. To switch to an increased range of gears, you need to use a double clutch release with rebuilding. Often the gears were engaged with a crunch and very tight. For the ZILs, this was considered the norm.

The car has a load capacity of 5 tons with a dead weight of 4.8. There was also a reclining body. ZIL-4502 could fit up to 3.8 cubic meters of bulk materials. The body reclined hydraulically from the power take-off shaft. The angle of elevation is 50 degrees. Dump truck lift time 15 seconds.

The truck is built on a classic ladder-type frame with two stamped side members connected by five riveted beams. On the front axle there is a dependent suspension (pivot beam) of spring type. There are also springs on the rear axle - two main sheets and two additional ones. Suspension care consists in periodically extruding the pivots and lubricating the spring fingers. Shock absorbers go very long. The brake system is pneumatic type. There are drums on both axles.

As the characteristic shows, ZIL-4502 is a hopelessly outdated truck today. And this is due not only to the lack of basic driver comfort, but also to high fuel consumption. For a hundred, this β€œswallow” consumes from 35 liters of gasoline.

Even with the installation of gas equipment, the operation of ZIL-4502 causes losses. Due to its great age, the car often breaks down. Problems are observed both with the carburetor and with the box. Often you need to repair the ignition system. Some people install here a diesel engine from the Goby. But even with this engine ZIL is much inferior to modern lawns, and even more so foreign cars.
