Permanent transformations and changes for the better in the system of Soviet higher education can be studied on the example of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, faculties and specialties in which have changed along with discoveries in such scientific fields as electronics, telemechanics, radio engineering and many others. Throughout the activities of MPEI was considered a prestigious university, which is difficult to enter. In this sense, little has changed in the history of the institute, except that new faculties have appeared that meet the requirements of recent times.
History of MPEI
Not every university in the country can boast of so many transformations that fell to the lot of the Moscow Energy Institute ( Technical University ). The great need for engineers in the electric and thermal fields, caused by large-scale electrification of the country, became the reason for the unification in 1930 of two metropolitan universities - MVTU im. Bauman and INKh them. Plekhanov at MPEI. Since that time, the Moscow Energy Institute has been constantly expanding, following the country's needs for new specialists.
For comparison:
- 1932 - 6 faculties: electrical engineering, thermal engineering, electrical engineering, electrical transport, telecommunications and engineering and economics.
- In 1933, the physico-energetic department was opened.
- In 1950, the launch of its own cogeneration plant, which is currently a training ground.
- 1953 - A branch of industrial heat power appears.
- 1958 - 2 branches in new fields of science were opened: “Automation and Computer Engineering” and “Electronics”.
- Since 1967, the university was granted the right to educate students according to its own curriculum, which brought the entire educational process at the Moscow Energy Institute to a completely new level.
- Faculties and specialties in it are constantly updated. So by 1975, there were 16 faculties in 44 specialties.
Since 2000 , the status of the institute has changed again. Since it becomes a leading university with training programs in the field of electronics, energy and IT technologies, it is awarded the name National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute.
At present, MPEI unites 9 institutes with a total of 70 faculties, more than 170 scientific laboratories, its own thermal power plants and a television center, a stadium, a library, and a cultural center.
The main direction of training at MPEI
At this institute, recruitment for undergraduate, specialty and master's programs is conducted every year. In order for an applicant to enter the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, the passing score must meet the criteria established by the faculties. Here, for example, are some of them:
- At the department of Energomashinostroyeniya, the following are taken into account: the minimum math score is 40; in physics - 40; in Russian - 50.

- Linguistic faculty: in Russian - 40 points, foreign language - 25, in history - 40.
Thus, in all 9 inpatient departments, 5 evening and 5 correspondence in each specialty, the subjects required for admission and minimum scores are indicated according to the results of passing the exam.

Engineering and Economic Department (Institute)
As early as the 1930s, the Faculty of Engineering and Economics was opened at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, and since then it has never disbanded. Currently, it is preparing for the following specialties:
- Full-time and evening students study future specialists in applied computer science in economics. In a four or five-year (full-time / part-time) educational program: training of developers of automation of production processes and information systems.
- The Information Security department for 4-5 years (inpatient / in absentia) prepares specialists who create, configure and install information protection programs.
- The Faculty of Quality Management for 4-5 years (full-time / evening) is training specialists in demand in the industry. They are the ones who study the production processes, control and develop new ways of monitoring the quality of products with minimal financial costs.
- The economic department trains analysts working in the anti-crisis economy. It is the graduates of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, specializing in economics, who are developing programs that bring industries and entire industries out of crisis situations. The collection of information, its analysis and the way to find a solution in the most difficult times of the global crisis, this is what they teach 5 years in absentia and 4 years full-time in this department.
- To become a financial manager, you should go to MPEI at the Management department. Main area of activity: entrepreneurship, municipal and city government.
- At the faculty of "Business Informatics", training is being conducted on such demanded new specialties as optimizers of business processes, designers of information systems.
