Of course, the transmission is one of the most important components of any car. Thanks to the gearbox , the engine crankshaft rotates and forces are transmitted to the drive wheels. But like all other nodes, the checkpoint needs constant maintenance. And today we will consider what oil to pour into a box of VAZ 2109 and in what proportions.
Features of the VAZ checkpoints
With the advent of the “eighth” and “ninth” family cars in the 80s, many car owners were perplexed by the fact that it was possible to add engine oil to the transmission of these models.
Such originality was caused by a fundamentally new design of the gearbox, which worked exclusively on special fluids. But since there were quite few such oils in the USSR, ordinary motor substances were poured into the gearbox.
A bit of history
What lubricants were popular in the USSR? The most common gear oil at that time was TAD-17I. This tool was created specifically for oblique and hypoid gears. However, for some reason, the TAD-17I was unsuitable for use at modern checkpoints. Its increased viscosity and special additives did not contribute to the complete formation of a film on the working surfaces of synchronizers.
In this regard, the alignment of the angular velocity of gears and couplings was not ensured. Therefore, the gears on the “nine” transmissions were switched on with very great effort, and during the shift a characteristic sound of gears jammed was formed. All this not only created discomfort when driving, but also significantly reduced the transmission resource, which led to its accelerated breakdown.
According to the state standard, substances of the TM-1 and TM-2 group turned out to be more suitable oils for the “nines”, which ensured a longer resource and durability of the gearbox parts. At the same time, the popular TAD-17I corresponded to the TM-5 standard, so it was simply inexpedient to use it on new transmissions, since the main pair on the Eights and Nines had helical gears, not hypoid gears.
What oil to fill in a box of VAZ 2109? About the features of TM 5-9P
This continued until in the early 90s (after 10 years of serial production of Samara) a new substance TM 5-9P was created for domestic transmissions. As practice has shown, on front-wheel drive cars this oil provided the formation of a thin film on the teeth for almost 75 thousand kilometers. However, this resource was read after the break-in of the checkpoint (before this period TM 5-9P changed once after 2-3 thousand kilometers).
What can be poured into the “nine” today?
With the development of the automotive market in Russia, the number of manufacturers of gear oils increases every year. What kind of oil can I add to the box of “nine” now? Specialists recommend purchasing substances corresponding to API group GL-4 for the VAZ 2109 gearbox. According to GOST, these can be TM-4 and TM 5-9P oils. According to the viscosity characteristics, it is better to focus on the choice of products with the following SAE markings:
Here is what kind of oil to fill in the box of "nine" experts recommend. It is these fluids that are most suitable for the gearboxes of VAZ 2109 and VAZ 2108. They have a very high resource and ensure the coordinated work of gearbox parts over several tens of thousands of kilometers.
How to replace gear oil on the "nine"?
What kind of oil to fill in the VAZ 2109 box, we have already figured out, now about how to replace it correctly. We note right away that this will take you no more than 15-20 minutes of free time, so there is simply no point in going to the service station.
So, for the beginning we are preparing the tools. In the course of work, we need 10 and 17 millimeter wrenches , as well as a container for waste fluid. The latter can be made from an empty can of antifreeze or engine oil - just cut out one side of it with a knife.
Getting to work. First you need to use the 10 mm key to unscrew the fasteners of the internal combustion engine protection. They are located under the front bumper. Next, using a screwdriver, unscrew the 2 protection bolts, which is located closer to the passenger compartment.
Now we put our “modernized” canister under the machine in a horizontal position and using a 17 mm key we unscrew the drain plug. Please note that this part is under pressure and, together with the liquid, it may fall into the canister.
We wait until the old transmission oil flows out and wrap the plug back. Next, we put the engine protection in place and take the oil dipstick from the gearbox. The latter is located at the top of the checkpoint. To find out the oil level, you need to wipe the dipstick with a dry rag, reinstall it in place and after 2-3 seconds pull it out again. In this case, the car should not be inclined. Ideally, the dipstick should not have a drop of oil. If so, then in the checkpoint you can safely fill in a new fluid.
The amount of oil
How much oil to fill in a box of "nine"? According to technical data, this figure is 3.0 liters for cars with a 4-speed transmission and 3.3 for cars with a 5-speed gearbox.
Fill the oil with a small margin of 200-250 milliliters. In this case, on the probe, the liquid level will be 4-5 millimeters above the “MAX” mark.
Where to put oil in a box? It should be poured into the same neck where the probe comes from. This completes the oil change in the VAZ 2109 box. That's it, now you can start operating the car again!
So, we found out which oil to fill in the VAZ 2109 box and how to replace it.
