In our short article we will talk about what elements the VAZ-2108 cooling system consists of. The engine of this car has a combined system - there is not only heat dissipation with the help of liquid, but also blowing of the air radiator. Moreover, the airflow occurs both in the oncoming flow and in the air that is created by the impeller of the electric fan. It should be noted that on cars VAZ-2108 and similar only an electric fan is used, mechanical ones are not installed on these models. They could only be found on "classic" VAZ 2101-2107 cars with carburetor engines.

System Design Description

First, let's look at the design of the system. It is also worth noting that the VAZ-2108 engine cooling system with a carburetor is slightly different from that used on injection engines. But there are not many differences - just a different design for the throttle assembly. An improved thermostat can also be used, as on more modern cars 2114-2115.

The pressurized cooling system is constantly under pressure, it is slightly higher than atmospheric. The pressure is created by a liquid pump, which allows the antifreeze to move through the nozzles a little faster. In addition, a radiator is connected to the cooling system, which heats the interior of the car. In order to ensure a normal microclimate inside the cabin, you need to maximize the distribution of warm air throughout the cabin. The air is pumped by the fan, warmed up by the radiator and flows through the nozzles to several exits - to the windshield, in the face of the driver and passengers, as well as in the legs. Moreover, at the G8, air ducts are directed even at the feet of passengers in the back seat.

Expansion tank

This is one of the main components of the VAZ-2108 cooling system with an injector. Why do I need an expansion tank in the design of the car? First of all, to maintain an optimal level of fluid in the system. The problem is that when heated, any liquid, including antifreeze, expands. Therefore, on all expansion tanks there are two labels - the minimum and maximum levels.

The tank is connected to the highest point of the system. Refueling should be carried out in such a way that the level of antifreeze is clearly between the minimum and maximum levels. Therefore, when heated, the level will increase to the maximum mark, and when cooled, it will drop to the minimum. Due to this, air locks that affect the temperature are not formed inside the system.

Branch pipes

These elements are made of rubber with reinforcement. With their help, all components are connected to each other. The pipes of the VAZ-2108 cooling system are attached with clamps. But the design has a number of drawbacks, among which we can distinguish the following:

  1. The thermostat housing is connected to the engine block using a short nozzle. This makes the design cheap, but it is likely that a leak will appear.
  2. The pipes that go from the cooling system to the faucet tap are located very close to the exhaust manifold. This affects the condition of the rubber - it quickly becomes unusable due to the high temperature. In addition, water and dirt constantly get on these pipes, which only exacerbates the situation.

Antifreeze or antifreeze?

Many drivers argue that it is better to fill in the VAZ-2108 cooling system. Some people prefer foreign brands of antifreezes of red or green colors, while others try to pour only blue antifreeze. Of course, in the red and green fluids that are found on sale, there are much more additives, they contribute to the normal operation of the entire system. But antifreeze also consists of a large number of additional substances that counteract the formation of scale, lubricate the elements of the pump, the inside of the radiators. Therefore, to save money, you can safely use antifreeze in the VAZ-2108 car. It has high efficiency and fairly low cost.

Thermostat and its design

Now let's talk about the thermostat, which is used on cars of the eighth series. In fact, the design of these devices on all machines is the same, but there are differences in the details. The essence of the work is to make timely switching and direct fluid from a small circle to a large circle and vice versa. In other words, the thermostat is needed to connect the main radiator to the circuit when the temperature of the liquid rises.

This is one of the key elements of the VAZ-2108 engine cooling system, it is installed on the expansion tank and is necessary in order to maintain optimal pressure in it. The fact is that the boiling point of antifreeze or antifreeze is slightly higher than that of plain water. And if this liquid is still under pressure, the temperature rises by several degrees. The cork design consists of a body and two valves - one lets air in when pressure drops, the other lets out with excessive increase. As a result, the optimum pressure value is maintained within the system.

Fans and sensors

There are only two fans on the VAZ-2108 car - on both radiators. Moreover, on carburetor motors, the fan of the main radiator is turned on using a sensor. Of course, you can call it a sensor with a stretch, since the device is more like a thermostat, only the bimetallic plate does not drive the valve, but the force contact. An element is installed in the side tank of the radiator.

As for the fan on the heater, it is turned on manually. Moreover, in order for the air to be hot, you must first open the tap with the appropriate handle. The fan power circuit uses a 3-position switch and a resistor block. A resistance is simply included in the circuit, which allows you to lower the supply voltage. Because of this, a decrease in the speed of the electric motor occurs.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the design of the system. And all the elements that can be found on the "eights" are used on other machines, but in a slightly different design.
