The first church in honor of the holy supreme apostles was built in the Basmannaya settlement at the end of the 17th century at the request of the military leader Bashev. It is known from historical archives that by 1702, 114 yards belonged to the parish of this church, which were taxed on its maintenance.
Construction
Since the church was originally wooden, a project began to develop very quickly that would replace it with a stone building. Construction began in 1705 next to the current church. Where then the wooden temple of Peter and Paul on New Basmannaya disappeared is unknown.
It should be noted that the structure we are talking about was made in accordance with the personal drawing of Emperor Peter the Great. In total, eight temples were built in this way, seven of which are located in St. Petersburg. And only the temple of Peter and Paul on New Basmannaya in Moscow was built. Money for the construction of the church was also granted by the sovereign in the amount of two thousand rubles. The emperor also influenced the special architecture of the temple, a sample of which His Majesty borrowed in Holland during his trip there. In 1708, consecration took place and services began in the lower aisle of the church, while the main church continued to be built. The throne was dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In 1714, Peter the Great issued a decree that, in connection with the transfer of the capital to St. Petersburg, all stone construction in Moscow must be suspended in order to occupy the builders with the construction of a new city on the Neva. Therefore, the temple of Peter and Paul in the New Basmannaya settlement was included in the list of buildings temporarily frozen. Only in 1717, by a special order of the Senate in response to a request for permission to complete the temple, construction work was restored. By this time, there were very few of them left - it was only necessary to install a spire and erect arches above the porch. The temple building was finally completed in 1719. A year later, a carved iconostasis, pulpit and choir were ordered to the temple.
In 1770, the temple complex acquired another chapel in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. His consecration took place two years later. In 1812, the church of Peter and Paul on New Basmannaya was plundered by Napoleonic troops.
In 1856-1868, the church was significantly rebuilt. This was due to the need for repairs, and in addition, by that time the temple was too small to meet the needs of the prayer room. As a result, the temple of Peter and Paul on New Basmannaya was significantly expanded. Two aisles were added to the complex. Both were dedicated to the Mother of God: one in honor of the Vladimir icon, and the second in honor of the image “Satisfy My Sorrows”.
Church after the revolution
After the revolution, the temple continued to function as a religious building on the basis of a special agreement, according to which the faithful received it for unlimited free rent. At one time, the crypt of the temple even housed a theological academy, which had lost its historical premises.
In 1921, the church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya was robbed to the delight of the city authorities, who, on the basis of claims to believers about the negligent attitude to the property transferred to them, closed the church two years later. In fact, the community was disbanded because it was on the side of Patriarch Tikhon and refused to join the renovation movement.
In the end, in 1924, the temple was transferred to the then official church of the Renovation. However, in the same year, according to a special petition and complaint of the Tikhonovites, the upper church was returned to them, leaving the believers of the renovation orientation the right to use the lower one. Subsequently, two attempts were made to close the temple, but managed to do this only in 1935. The building was originally transferred under a military warehouse, but it often passed from hand to hand. As a result, he was taken over by the All-Russian Research Institute of Geophysics.
Return of the temple
The Church of Peter and Paul on Novaya Basmannaya, reviews of which can be attributed to one of the most beautiful temples in the capital, was transferred back to believers in 1992. Until now, it continues to work on restoration and restoration.
