The Olympic sports complex in Moscow is one of the most famous and popular sports facilities in the city. It was built for the summer Olympics, which took place in 1980. Design
Its location falls on the very center of historical places in Moscow.
Several Russian design institutes worked on the project of the sports complex and at the same time an architectural and construction group led by M.V. Posokhin. In early 1982, Posokhin, along with B.I. Thor, received the Lenin Prize for the creation of this project. Construction began in the fall of 1977 and ended three years later, on the eve of the opening of the XXII Olympic Games.
Construction and characteristics of the complex
The sports complex area is distinguished from other areas of the city by a well-planned and neat layout, decent quality of housing development, a lot of green spaces, good environment. The area occupied by the complex can be characterized by a bright solemnity, originality and splendor. All this distinguishes the built-up area from the typical Moscow buildings of recent decades.
The sports complex includes two sports facilities - a huge ellipse-shaped building with an indoor stadium and a similar smaller building with several pools. The stadium area is 11,000 m 2 . At its widest point, the stadium building is 224 meters; and in the narrowest - 183 meters. The stadium has a unique 6 mm thick steel suspension coating. The stationary concrete coating of the stadium’s central arena has the ability to transform into ice.
The total area of the complex is 54,887 m². The interior space can be divided into two halves with a movable partition that absorbs sounds, about 25 meters high. The partition, consisting of more than 25 sliding panels, is assembled in just a short time and dividing the arena into two parts, which allows two different events to be held simultaneously.
The capacity of the Olympic sports complex in Moscow can reach a maximum of 36 thousand spectators. Its dimensions correspond to the dimensions of a standard football field.
Olympic today
Since the opening, Olimpiyskiy has hosted many competitions and tournaments at the venues, arenas and pools of its establishment. This is volleyball and basketball, hockey and boxing, sports and rhythmic gymnastics, karate and taekwondo, badminton and athletics, biathlon, etc.
More than 18 Russian teams use the complex as a place for their training in various sports.

On the rental areas of the complex there are many school schools for various types of dancing, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, billiards. Also, for fans of martial arts, classes are held in the aikido group for children and adults with instructors who are students of the Shihan Y. Fujimoto and the traditional karate sports club.
Musical "Olympic"
From the beginning of the eighties to the present day, the Olimpiysky sports complex has been a popular music venue. Concerts of hundreds of domestic and foreign performers in various musical directions took place here. In 2009, Olimpiysky hosted Eurovision. The complex during its existence has hosted dozens of festivals, hundreds of sports tournaments, circus performances, exhibitions, corporate events and conferences.
The sports complex is equipped with a press center with 120 seats, a meeting room, a conference room, a press bar, convenient parking for more than 600 cars and 300 buses. The sports complex has a large number of restaurants, cafes and bistros, beauty salons and a variety of shops.
