Design

Several Russian design institutes worked on the project of the sports complex and at the same time an architectural and construction group led by M.V. Posokhin. In early 1982, Posokhin, along with B.I. Thor, received the Lenin Prize for the creation of this project. Construction began in the fall of 1977 and ended three years later, on the eve of the opening of the XXII Olympic Games.

The sports complex area is distinguished from other areas of the city by a well-planned and neat layout, decent quality of housing development, a lot of green spaces, good environment. The sports complex includes two sports facilities - a huge ellipse-shaped building with an indoor stadium and a similar smaller building with several pools. The stadium area is 11,000 m 2 . At its widest point, the stadium building is 224 meters; and in the narrowest - 183 meters. The stadium has a unique 6 mm thick steel suspension coating. The stationary concrete coating of the stadium’s central arena has the ability to transform into ice.

The total area of ​​the complex is 54,887 m². The interior space can be divided into two halves with a movable partition that absorbs sounds, about 25 meters high. The partition, consisting of more than 25 sliding panels, is assembled in just a short time and dividing the arena into two parts, which allows two different events to be held simultaneously.

The capacity of the Olympic sports complex in Moscow can reach a maximum of 36 thousand spectators. Its dimensions correspond to the dimensions of a standard football field.

Since the opening, Olimpiyskiy has hosted many competitions and tournaments at the venues, arenas and pools of its establishment. This is volleyball and basketball, hockey and boxing, sports and rhythmic gymnastics, karate and taekwondo, badminton and athletics, biathlon, etc.

More than 18 Russian teams use the complex as a place for their training in various sports.
