Mercedes-190 is perhaps one of the most popular “adult” cars of this famous German concern. It was created in 1980, and was published from 1982 to 1993. This car has lived quite a long life, so it’s worth telling a little more about it.
About history
In the early eighties, the company experienced certain financial difficulties. All because of the aftermath of the 1973 oil crisis. Therefore, the company thought about creating an economical and compact car. Well, the idea was realized, and the world saw the Mercedes-190 in a w201 body. And it was not just an economical car. The car became a model, thanks to which the concern quickly gained leadership in the European D class, and its cars became much more in demand than those produced by the eternal rival BMW.
Firstly, the body length was reduced. People accustomed to the long and dimensional Mercedes w123 were surprised by this decision. But the concept was aimed at increasing efficiency. So by reducing the size, it turned out to reduce the weight by as much as 160 kilograms. The drag coefficient also became smaller - it was brought up to 0.33 C. Due to this, the car began to consume less fuel. The compact layout, simplicity, reliability, combined with traditionally high quality and comfort made the Mercedes-190 the most popular car of the time.
Production start
Mercedes-190 quickly became popular. As a result, manufacturers began to think how to improve it in order to make demand even greater. So it was decided to create a sports sedan, which became popular among young people. Mercedes-190 has even become a competitor to the legendary Mercedes w123, which, incidentally, is an order of magnitude higher than this model.
Initially, the first models equipped ABS disc brakes, but only as an option. There was a rather voluminous trunk - 410 liters. Of course, due to the reduced dimensions, the space in the back row has become smaller, so that with complete comfort there can only accommodate two people, three will be a little cramped. But that was enough to start production.
Power units
In 1983, in September, the updated Mercedes-190 was released. Diesel - that’s what engine was installed under his hood. Two-liter, 75-horsepower, economical - these cars instantly became popular, especially among German taxi drivers. Some time later, a much more powerful model was released. It was a Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16. Under the hood, he had a 16-valve 185-horsepower engine that reached a top speed of 225 km / h! Such indicators could not leave anyone indifferent. Not every modern car, by the way, can accelerate to “hundreds” in 7.5 seconds and develop such a speed. And here - a car of the early eighties! In addition, this Mercedes-190 was more attractive in other respects. It was distinguished by aerodynamic sills and bumpers, a roof spoiler, low-profile tires and high-quality trim, made in the classic Mercedes classic.
Enhanced Features
In 1984, also in September, manufacturers released cars that had an improved diesel engine. Mercedes-190 now boasted a 2-liter 105-horsepower economical engine. This engine was not only high-speed (and it developed a maximum of 174 km / h), but also not costly. What is his fuel consumption? At that time it was very low. But even now, given the age of these engines (more than thirty years!), They do not consume more than nine liters of diesel per 100 kilometers in the urban cycle.
Then, 15-inch wheels and telescopic wipers began to be installed on the car, they began to equip the model with a one-time drive of attachments and even hydraulic valve pushers. And gasoline cars began to be equipped with the so-called catalytic converters of exhaust gases. Together with these innovations in the w201 series appeared 2.3-liter engines for 132 liters. pp., as well as 6-cylinder power units, developing a capacity of 160 "horses".
Appearance
Much has been said about the technical specifications. But the appearance is also an important nuance relating to such a car as the Mercedes-190. Tuning - many current, modern car owners decide on this type of work. But, I must say, the model even looks decent without it, especially after restyling. The indisputable advantage of this car are its forms. It is this appearance that over time becomes a real classic. Clear forms, refined, strict lines, a confident “look” of the headlights, a radiator grill, perfectly calibrated in size, and, of course, practicality. This is the Mercedes-190.
Tuning can make this car more attractive if the work was done by such well-known ateliers as AMG and BRABUS. Mercedes w201 190 became so popular that the specialists of these companies took the model to improve it according to their own taste, so to speak. And we must admit that it turned out great. The car has become more athletic, powerful, dynamic and even aggressive. In general, such a model is able to compete with many machines produced today by various other companies.
Cost
And finally, it is worth discussing another nuance regarding a car such as the Mercedes-190. Price is what this is all about. Of course, “charged” versions (for example, 2.3-16 or 2.5-16) will cost more than regular ones. After the mid-80s, only such were produced - they were more powerful, faster and more comfortable. And if today, in 2015, I want to become the owner of a classic Mercedes, then it is worth buying the “charged” version.
The cost of such a car in good condition can vary from 80 thousand rubles to almost 200,000 rubles. It all depends on the configuration, installed engine, comfort and many other nuances. But in general, even the maximum cost is not so great for such a car.
