Since the birth of alternative metal, many adherents of this genre have appeared, and Disturbed from among them. In our "great and mighty" this name can be translated as "Alarmed." Over the years the team has existed, the guys have achieved a lot, and have become popular in all civilized countries. The article will present a detailed chronology of the Disturbed group with a photo.
These guys successfully progressed along a creative path and soon reached the peak of their fame, but in 2011 they decided to take a break, thereby frightening their ardent fans. But only three years later the group was revived and successfully wrote songs, and the newest album can be heard already in October of this year.
Background
At first (94-96), the rock band was called Brawl, and when David Draiman joined them, the lineup looked like this:
- Vocals - Erich Avalt.
- Guitar - Dan Donigan.
- Drums - Mike Wengren.
- Bass player Steve Kmak.
According to Donigan, the group was supposed to be called Crawl, but that name was already taken. Avalt for some reason left the guys after the demo was released, so they advertised in the Illinois Entertainer about the vacant vocalist position. Dreiman noticed him and phoned Brawl and went to audition. The guys were satisfied with both the vocal data and the character of the new candidate, so they told him “yes”. David was ready to work in any genre, which, of course, ruled out possible creative differences.
Start
Rock group Disturbed was formed by four Chicago guys in 1996, and Brawl was oblivious. David Dreiman proposed a new name , because at that time the guys had to be “pushed” to unprecedented accomplishments and kept the bar at a certain level. And to be called “Alarmed” seemed to him a great idea.
Soon two demos were released, each of which had three singles. On the first there were songs: Down with the Sickness, The Game and Meaning of Life. And on the second: Droppin 'Plates, Stupify and Want. Then the guys began their collaboration with Giant Records, and made a talisman for the group, giving it the name The Guy ("Guy").
In 2000, the first album by Disturbed - The Sickness - was released, and fell on the 29th line of the Billboard 200, and sales in America exceeded 4,000,000 copies. For the team that recorded only their debut album, this is a very rapid take-off!
Success
Since the beginning of 2001, the team recorded a cover of Faith No More (Midlife Crisis), but they were in no hurry to perform it before the audience. And in the summer they were lucky to take part in the legendary Ozzfest tour. Due to their rapidly growing fame, the organizers placed their performance in the middle of the festival - closer to Black Sabbath. The single Fear was honored to be included in Ozzfest 2001.
The following year also became a landmark event, as the group Disturbed released a documentary on DVD called MOL, which talked about their creative everyday life, work in the studio and interviews, in addition, several videos from a live performance were attached.
The second studio album Believe was released on September 17, 2002, and immediately took off on the first line of the Billboard 200. Soon a clip for a song called Prayer was released, but it contained too realistic scenes that resembled the fatal terrorist attack on America on September 11, 2001- go. Therefore, it was not easy for him to get on TV. Around the same time, the Disturbed lead singer recorded the cool single Forsaken, which sounded in the movie Queen of the Damned.
Own tour and composition changes
After the successful release of Believe, Disturbed was again invited to Ozzfest 2003. Then the guys decided to ride the States on their own with their own Music as a Weapon II tour. Teams like Taproot, Chevelle, and Unloco were invited. In one of the performances, for the first time, the song Dehumanized was heard, which is not yet included in any album. Disturbed did not finish the tour very well, because at the end of the tour bassist Steve Kmak was fired due to some personal complaints between the musicians. However, he was soon replaced by John Moyer, after which the group successfully played at House of Blues. At this concert, new singles Monster and Hell sounded, which became the bonus notes for the next disc.
Platinum album
On September 20, 2005, the Disturbed group released Ten Thousand Fists, which again appeared on the first line of the Billboard 200. In the first week after release, sales exceeded 238 thousand disks, and in January 2006 the circulation increased to one million copies, after which the album was considered platinum. In Ozzfest 2006, the guys were already on a par with such cult groups as Lacuna Coil, System of a Down, and even the “great and terrible” Ozzy Osbourne.
Live on Launch Radio Networks, David Dreiman said that 20 tracks were created for the new album, but only 14 were officially included. Therefore, unrealized singles were leaked to fans via the Internet. These are the songs of Hell, Monster, Two Worlds. Ten Thousand Fists became platinum twice, and was number one on all US charts.
Scandal
A new tour was planned for Disturbed for 2006, but had to be postponed a couple of times “for later”. The first time - because the vocalist had serious problems with the vocal chords, and he had to decide on an operation that was successful. And the second - because of the scandalous story in which David Dreyman played a major role.
It all started with the fact that the vocalist said an unpleasant thing about the RIAA, which sued users of file hosting services. Here are his words: “How to recover from the children and spend a lot of money on it, you could simply use the Internet’s capabilities in a quality manner. I don’t need their protection, and I didn’t ask anyone about this! ”
The Music as a Weapon III tour did take place at the end of the year, and Stone Sour, Nonpoint and Flyleaf took part in it. Upon returning to Chicago, Draiman announced publicly that the group was already working on his next album.
New achievement
From the album Indestructible, released in June 2008, and blew "darkness." The singles sounded more gloomy than before, and some of them were a reflection of the vocalist's real experiences. The album also includes previously unrealized Divide and Perfect Insanity, which were written long before the release of the debut album.
The guys played dark music at the request of Dreiman to emphasize the meaning of his songs. The main track, Indestructible, was written for soldiers in hot spots. Also, the same video was shot for this song.
The opinion of music critics was mixed, but the album, like the previous one, became platinum. In 2009, the single Inside the Fire was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Song". This was followed by another round of Music as a Weapon IV, in which many well-known bands took part.
At a press conference, Draiman assured that the next album would be just as gloomy and lyrical. However, other members of the group said that in the light of the events experienced by the frontman in recent years, the songs promise to be filled with aggression and hard enough for perception.
Asylum Output
After the tour, the guys rested a bit, and then started working on a new album, which was released on August 31, 2010. Moreover, they began to compose material two years before. Asylum, as well as Indestructible, was produced by the group itself. Soon, the video for the song Another Way to Die was released. Some tracks made it into the Rock Band series of games.
The fifth album of the group Disturbed again appeared on the first line of the Billboard 200, and sales exceeded 179 thousand copies.
Respite
Despite the fact that four albums in a row took first place in popularity in the States, the band Disturbed announced its "temporary retirement." At that time, they did not yet know whether they could still assemble. Among the reasons for unlimited vacation were such factors as:
- desire to work solo;
- crisis in the world of rock music;
- personal reasons.
However, the musicians reassured fans that there were no disagreements within the band. Before leaving in 2011, the band released The Lost Children.
Solo projects of musicians 2012-2014:
- Bass player John Moyer began working with Adrenaline Mob. The first performance took place on March 12, 2012.
- Vocalist David Dreiman, in May 2012, he put together a band called Device. And already in 2013, the first album was released with the participation of famous rock musicians.
- Donagan and Wengren together with Dan Chandler (Evans Blue) in 2013 created their own project, and soon released their own disc.
- In early 2015, it became known that John Moyer created the band Art of Anarchy, inviting the twins Vince and John Wott, Ron Tal and Scott Weyland. Their first album was released immediately.
Revival of the group
The first hint of the Disturbed reunion was a very explicit video in which The Guy lies under a life support device and breathes quietly. He, like the new team logo, was posted on June 22, 2014 on the official Disturbed Facebook page.
The very next day, the group officially announced that their story was continuing. The new album, the record of which was kept in secret, was released on August 21 of the same year, and the band held a concert in their native Chicago. Then, on November 18, 2016, the Live at Red Rocks live album was released. Disturbed presented their performance in Australia at the famous The X Factor festival.
Put on a par with the "pop"
Disturbed was invited to the 59th Grammy account, which took place on February 12, 2017. The guys represented the best performance in the style of rock, along with celebrities such as Alabama Shakes, Twenty One Pilots, David Bowie and ... singer Bjens. Moreover, how the pop scene star got there was not entirely clear. In an interview with Metal Hammer, David Dreiman expressed dissatisfaction with such a circumstance, saying that: “If Disturbed and Bjens were nominated in the same category, then something went wrong.”
Work on a new album
The new single from the Evolution album was released on August 16 this year, and the guys promise to realize the album on October 19, 2018. It will contain 10 songs.
About group mascot
This group’s amulet “debuted” in the Land of Confusion video, as well as on four studio discs and one of the collections. Disturbed's “guy” was coined by Todd MacFarlane, the creator of Spawn.
Style
When the guys just started, the music of the group Disturbed could be attributed to such a genre as "hard and heavy". However, later the guys switched to nu metal and an alternative.
Dreiman on this subject said the following: “Apparently we have too many melodic songs, or the music is not aggressive enough for listeners to call our style heavy metal. I love this genre, but we do not strive to remain within its narrow framework. "
The guys themselves do not consider themselves adherents of any particular style, but simply play the way they like. However, the fact that they were introduced to the once popular nu metal brought Disturbed a certain benefit. According to Dreiman, the group plays in the classic-metal genre, and the bands that inspired them to work are Metallica, Judas Priest, Pantera, Iron Maiden and the legendary Black Sabbath.
