Story
The Chuvash church in Ulyanovsk was erected in 1884 at the initiative of the famous enlightener of the Chuvash people living in Simbirsk, I. Ya. Yakovlev. It functioned as a house temple at the Chuvash city teacher’s school. The construction was carried out with donations from private philanthropists, a grant from the Ministry of Education, as well as funds from the Orthodox Missionary Society. Initially, the church building was a 2-story brick house, designed by the famous architect Lvovich-Kostritsa A.I. In the winter of 1885, the church was consecrated.
In the late 90s, the church was rebuilt anew, building an altar. Funds for the reconstruction were provided by the merchant of the first guild Nikolai Yakovlevich Shatrov. The year 1898 is called the start date of the Orthodox fraternity organized at the church.
The church carried out active educational activities aimed at training and education of baptized and unbaptized Chuvash, as well as Russian and baptized Tatars 11-18 years old, who were taken to school. By 1918, about one and a half thousand people were trained by school staff. In 1918, the temple was closed. His activity was resumed in the 90s of the 20th century.
