Wipers ( wiper blades) are designed to ensure proper cleanliness of the windshield and rear windows of the car. In good condition, with the support of washers, they can easily cope with dirt, snow and water. But if the wipers stop working, in bad weather it is not recommended to continue driving. Your safety depends on it. It is better to stop and try to repair them.
In this article we will talk about why the wipers do not work on the VAZ-2109 . We will consider the main causes of this malfunction, as well as ways to resolve it.
The design of the wiper "nine"
If the wipers do not work in your VAZ-2109 , or do not work as they should, before proceeding with their repair, it will be useful to find out about the wiper device as a whole. So it will be easier to establish the cause of the malfunction and subsequently eliminate it.
A wiper is a device consisting of a drive (an electric motor with an extended shaft), a gearbox, and a lever system called a trapezoid. It is she who drives the wipers themselves.
How the wiper works
At the front end of the rotor of the electric motor a worm is cut, which engages and drives the main gear of the gearbox. When the wiper is turned on, the voltage on the vehicle's electrical circuit is applied to the electric motor. At the same time, its shaft begins to rotate, driving the gearbox. He, in turn, moves the levers, the ends of which are brought to the surface of the bonnet panel of the body and connected to the wipers. One of the ends of the gearbox shaft is equipped with a special cam that controls the moving contact of the wipers stop in the extreme position.
Wiper control
The wiper is controlled by a special switch mounted on the steering column of the car. With it, the wipers not only turn on and off, but can also work in various modes. This allows you to adjust the speed of the wiper blades depending on weather conditions. In VAZ-2109 cars, three modes are provided:
- intermittent;
- constant with low speed wipers;
- constant with high speed wipers moving.
It often happens that the wipers do not work on the VAZ-2109 in only one of the modes, so it is important to know not only the design features of the wiper, but also the mechanism for controlling its operation.
Intermittent wipers operating mode is switched on in the first (working) and second position of the switch lever. Its operation is provided by a relay type 526.3747. It is located in the mounting block of the car and is indicated on the electronic circuit as "K3". This relay also includes wipers when starting the windshield and rear window washer.
In the third position, the cleaner operates in constant mode with a low speed. To switch to the continuous operation of the wipers at high speed, a fourth lever position is provided.
Symptoms
To deal with the breakdown of the wiper, let's look at what signs it may have.
Symptoms of a malfunction may be as follows:
- when turned on, the device does not react at all (the relay does not click, the electric motor does not work);
- the relay is triggered, but the motor does not turn on;
- both the relay and the electric motor work, but the brushes do not move or move in the wrong direction;
- the intermittent mode of the wipers VAZ-2109 does not work ;
- the motor does not stop in intermittent mode;
- wipers work slowly.
And now we will analyze each of the signs individually in the context of probable malfunctions and methods for their elimination.
The wiper does not respond to switching on or switching modes
If you are trying to turn on the wiper, but the wipers do not work on your VAZ-2109 , and when you switch the lever, you donβt hear either clicks of the relay or the sound of a working electric motor, the reason may lie in the switch, or in the relay, or in the fuses.
In this case, you must first check the integrity of the wiper fuse. It is located in the mounting block and is designated as F5. You can check it with a multimeter, turned on in tester mode. Further we pass to the bimetallic safety lock installed in a cleaner reducer. If the wipers on the VAZ-2109 stopped working in the winter, the reason may be in it. This fuse was equipped with the latest modifications of the βnineβ. Its role is to protect the engine of the cleaner from overheating in cases where the brushes freeze to the glass. You can check it with the same multimeter turned on in tester mode.
Next, go to the relay. As already mentioned, it is located in the mounting block and is designated as "K3". We find the relay, remove it from the seat, and put in its place a known-good interrupter. Check the operation of the wiper. If it works, buy a new relay. If everything remains unchanged, continue troubleshooting.
As for the switch itself, it is very difficult to verify its operation on its own. It has a rather complicated design, so it is also easier to replace it with a known worker than to try to repair it. By the way, if the wipers and turn signals of the VAZ-2109 do not work , you can be sure that the problem is in the steering column switch.
Relay trips but motor does not start
Having discovered a similar sign, it can be assumed that some of the above-mentioned fuses or the electric motor itself has failed. Check fuses with a multimeter. If everything is in order with them, open the hood and inspect the trapezoid for deformation or the presence of a foreign object in the structure. In winter, the wiper blades may freeze to the windshield. This phenomenon is accompanied by similar symptoms, therefore, if the wipers of the VAZ-2109 do not work in frosty weather, first check their condition.
If the trapezoid is in working condition, and the wiper blades are movable, you will have to remove the motor for diagnosis. To completely eliminate other malfunctions, after removing the electric motor, connect it directly to the battery terminals. Earned - look for the cause in the electrical circuit, no - contact the auto electrician.
The relay and drive motor work, but the wipers do not move or move in the wrong direction
It often happens that when the wipers are turned on, all the wiper elements work in the normal mode, but the wipers remain immovable or move along the wrong trajectory. This is a sure sign that the slots on the levers of the trapezoid have become unusable. A similar problem is solved by replacing the levers. In an extreme case, you can try to tighten the nuts attaching the wiper housings, pressing them stronger to the tips, but over time, the malfunction will reappear.
Intermittent mode does not turn on
Turn on the wiper and find that the first position of the VAZ-2109 wipers does not work , corresponding to intermittent mode, try switching to a constant slow or fast mode. If in other positions the wipers are working properly, go directly to the relay. Replace it with a known good one.
The motor in intermittent mode does not stop
Intermittent operation differs from the rest in that at the end of each cycle the wipers make a stop in the initial position. This is achieved due to the movement of the cam located on the rear end of the gearbox shaft. It closes and opens the movable contact of the wiper limit switch. Disruptions in the operation of wipers in intermittent mode are usually associated with its malfunction: wear, damage. Also, the problem may be in the plate of the switch or in its contacts.
The cam can easily be replaced on its own. As for the plate and contacts, if necessary, they simply need to be bent.
Wipers work slowly on the VAZ-2109
The reasons for the reduction in brush speed are:
- low air temperature;
- wear (licking) of splines of the connection of levers and cases of wipers;
- malfunctioning electric motor.
In the first case, the wipers can move slower than usual due to the solidification of the grease on the gears of the gearbox. As a rule, when the car warms up, this problem disappears.
When the splined joint is worn, the brushes can also move more slowly by turning the lever tips in their seats. This problem is solved by replacing worn items.
If these measures did not bring the desired result, remove the electric motor and send it for repair.
The rear wiper VAZ-2109 does not work
The VAZ-2109 has another janitor. It is located on the glass of the rear door and has an independent drive. The janitor is driven by a separate electric motor with a small gearbox. You can get to it from the inside of the door by removing its trim.
A malfunction of the rear wiper can also be associated with problems with the switch, as well as with malfunctions of the electric motor itself. Most often it stops working:
- due to a violation of normal contact in the connector;
- rupture of the supply wire;
- damage to the electric motor or its gearbox.
