St. Peter Rathensky (or Ratsky)

He was born in Volyn in the pious family of Theodore. Even before the birth of his son, his mother, Eupraxia, had a Lord’s vision in which it was revealed that her child would serve in the glory of God.

At the age of 12, young Peter entered the Volyn Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, where he devoted almost all his time to studying the Holy Scriptures and icon painting. He handed out his icons to the monastic brethren and to Christians who visited their monastery. One of these is the Peter's icon of the Mother of God, dated 1327, according to the life of the saint. This icon and the icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Peter, receiving the blessing of the blessing, presented the Metropolitan of All Russia to Maxim, who visited their holy monastery, as a gift. He sent the Peter's icon to Vladimir, where the department of the Kiev Metropolitans was then located , and in front of the Assumption icon, he prayed all his life.

In 1305, after Metropolitan Maxim departed to the Lord, the Vladimir department was free for three years of troubled times, then a dispute went over for the place of the high priest. Prince Galitsky Yuri sent Peter to Constantinople, and Mikhail Yaroslavovich Tverskoy and Vladimirsky - his ascetic, Father Superior Gerontius. Going on the road to Constantinople, Gerontius took with him the Peter icon and the holy baton. When he sailed across the sea, he had a vision. The Mother of God herself told him that he was laboring in vain, for he would not get the dignity of the priest, he would belong to the one who painted Her image - the minister of Her Son - the Hegumen Hegumen Peter, who would occupy the throne of the Russian Metropolitanate, he would piously live to old age and with joy depart to the Lord of all.

In Constantinople, Gerontius involuntarily told about his vision to the Patriarch of Constantinople Athanasius, and he took the rod and icon from him, handed them to Peter and blessed him to become the Metropolitan of All Russia. So the Peter's icon of the Mother of God returned to its creator and left for Vladimir. And when in 1325 the Russian metropolis was transferred from Vladimir to Moscow, there Metropolitan Peter transferred his icon and placed it in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.
