Decades of godlessness led to the fact that even those Russians who consider themselves Orthodox Christians have little knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, not to mention the works of prominent theologians of the past. As a result, they have many questions, the answers to which are extremely difficult to find without special knowledge. Therefore, the word of the wise shepherd, which is Archimandrite Iannuarius Ivliev, is of particular importance. His brief biography will be presented in today's article.
Childhood
The future archimandrite Iannuarius Ivliev was born in 1943 in Vologda. His family consisted of ordinary Soviet employees. When Dima was 7 years old, his mother died. She, like her husband Yakov Ivliev, was an ardent communist, quite far from the church. The future archimandrite did not receive a Christian upbringing. But later he always noted that it was in the family and school that he was instilled with the basic moral principles that penetrated the blood and flesh of Russian culture from Orthodoxy.
In his teenage years, Dmitry had the ability to study natural sciences and mathematics. Therefore, no one was surprised at his decision to choose the profession of a physicist.
Studying and working at a university
In the early 60s, the young man entered the Leningrad University at the Faculty of Physics. In parallel, he attended the classical department of the Faculty of Philology, where he listened to the lectures of the famous professor O. I. Dovatur. After graduating from a prestigious university in 1966, Dmitry Yakovlevich Ivliev entered graduate school. Until 1975, he worked at Leningrad State University as a researcher and was engaged in research in the field of near-Earth space physics.
Conversion
While studying in graduate school, the future archimandrite Iannuarius Ivliev, who received an insignificant scholarship, began to look for a part-time job. She should not interfere with his studies. There were few options. Dmitry was glad when he was taken as a night watchman to St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Epiphany. There, a young man first came into contact with church life. He clearly saw its shortcomings: it was closed to liturgical practice, strict state supervision, the absence of youth and missionary work, etc. However, all this did not push him away. On the contrary, he was delighted and interested in the wealth of Orthodoxy, which was hidden behind visible poverty.
Dmitry began to randomly study Christian literature, which only caught his eye. The first book he met was The Acts of the Holy Apostles. After he enthusiastically began to read the works of Russian religious philosophers Vladimir Solovyov and father Pavel Florensky.
Study of theology
In the late 1970s, the future archimandrite Iannuarius Ivliev met with the Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod Nicodemus, who made a great impression on him. He invited the young scientist to become a student at the Leningrad Theological Academy. In October 1979, at the Assumption Krestovsky Church, Dmitry was consecrated Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod as a reader.
Later, D. Ya. Ivliev accepted monastic tonsure with the name Iannuarius. Then he was ordained to the priesthood.
Service
Over the next three decades, Fr. Iannuari taught the scriptures and performed various church obediences. He did a lot of research on issues relevant to modern theology. He strove to bring the Good News to every parishioner and even those people who had never before sought solace in Christianity.
In 1981, Fr. Iannuarius defended his thesis with a Ph.D. in theology. The theme of his work was the patristic interpretations of some scriptures. Since that time, Ivliev became a teacher of the Theological Academy, where he still teaches biblical theology and the New Testament.
In 1985, he was awarded the title of assistant professor. A year later about. Iannuarius was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite by the Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod. In 2005, he was awarded the title of professor at the St. Petersburg Orthodox Theological Academy.
Further activities
In subsequent years, Archimandrite Iannuarius Ivliev, conversations with which helped many people find their way to God, was engaged in active church and public activities. For many years he was a member of the theological and biblical commissions of the Holy Synod, and he also oversaw the scripture of the Central Scientific Center “Orthodox Encyclopedia”, took part in various international consultations and conferences.

The well-known radio station Grad Petrov regularly broadcasts audio recordings of the priest's lectures. They present the Holy Scriptures in an accessible form to the audience and bring the Good News to every person. Thanks to these programs, many residents of St. Petersburg even thought about saving their souls and returned to the bosom of the church.
