Ignition module VAZ-2114: features and characteristics

Each of us knows that a spark is needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. The latter is formed precisely thanks to the operation of the ignition system. Its design on different cars has some differences, but its basic principle of operation remains unchanged. And today we’ll talk about how to check the ignition module VAZ-2114, as well as how to replace it with our own hands.

ignition module VAZ 2114

Characteristic

This car element is a complex electrical device, the main purpose of which is to generate a high voltage current and transfer it to the candle. In total, two types of modules are used on cars - with one coil for each candle (separate) or immediately for two (block). The ignition module VAZ (2114th "Lada") - block type. Such elements include a double spark coil. The design of this part requires the following components:

  • Low voltage terminals.
  • High voltage output.
  • Iron plate core.
  • Primary and secondary windings.

Single-spark analogs have a slightly different design, which includes:

  • Core.
  • High voltage connections via spring contact.
  • A candle.
  • External terminal for low voltage.
  • Secondary and primary winding.

Unlike single-spark, such coils are easier to mount due to their special (block) design, which has a common housing. Despite the fact that there are several such elements in the unit, they all work as independent devices. This design makes it possible to use a shortened conductor, which goes to the primary winding of the mechanism.

VAZ-2114 ignition module - malfunctions

The incorrect operation of this system can be judged by the following symptoms. Firstly, failures in the pickup of a vehicle’s speed can indicate coil failures. Secondly, this can be manifested in a significant loss of machine power, as well as in the "floating" idle speed of the engine. And thirdly, inoperative 1-4 or 2-3 cylinders signal incorrect operation.

It should be noted that such symptoms very often occur due to a faulty DMRV or idle speed regulator. Therefore, first of all, we look at their performance, and only then we diagnose the ignition module.

VAZ-2114: where is this part located?

On cars of the Lada Samara-2 family, this element is located in the engine compartment.

The easiest way to detect it is to find high voltage wires. One end reaches for the candles, and the second goes to the ignition module itself.

How to diagnose the module?

Checking the ignition module (VAZ-2114 "Samara-2") for performance is performed in this sequence. To begin with, we take out the negative terminal of the battery, and then we get the wiring from the coil mechanism. Next, we unscrew all the screws and bolts that secure the element body. Further, all work (as before) is performed with the engine turned off. We disconnect the module assembly, using a multimeter we measure the level of total resistance between the terminals of the contact connector. Then we compare the results with the table standards that are indicated in the instruction manual. If the received data significantly differs from the tabulated data in a smaller direction, it means that a short circuit occurred in the machine and the coil malfunctioned.

After installing the continuity of the wires, you can begin to diagnose the secondary engine circuit - measuring the resistance level between the ignition terminals. Based on the results of measurements, we draw conclusions, and if the malfunction was hidden in the coil, then the module must be completely replaced. There are no other solutions to this problem.

How to replace the device with your own hands? Instruments

First, we need to prepare a set of keys that we will use. In the course of the removal and installation of the ignition module, we need two socket wrenches of 13 and 17 millimeters, as well as one open- end wrench of “10”. We will need the latter in order to remove the terminal from the battery. In addition, you should prepare the hexagon on "5". With the help of the latter, we will release the ignition module from the holder during dismantling.

Part removal process

So, how is the ignition module replaced by the VAZ 2114th Lada? First you need to de-energize the on-board network of the car. To do this, as in the previous case, remove the negative terminal from the battery (if it has not been removed before). Next, you need to remove the decorative engine trim. This can be done by unscrewing the oil fill cap. It is worth noting that this operation is used only by owners of VAZs with a 1.6-liter engine. One and a half liter “Samaras” are not supplied with a similar engine pad.

At the next stage, we remove the block with wires and high-voltage wires from the module. Using a 13 key, unscrew the two mounting bolts of the engine crankcase, unscrew the last module mount with a 17 horn. Further, this part is quietly removed from the engine compartment to the outside. The module itself is freed from the holder using a 5 mm hexagon.

Installation

Before installing a new element in the machine, it is necessary to pre-connect the high-voltage wires according to the module diagram. You also need to pay attention to the quality of the fasteners - excess oxidation and dirt are thoroughly cleaned at the ends at the joints.

connection of the ignition module VAZ 2114
Further, the ignition module of the VAZ 2114th Lada can be safely installed in a regular place. The assembly of the element is in the reverse order. After the ignition module has been connected, the VAZ-2114 needs to be started and the performance of the parts checked. If all of the above symptoms of malfunctions disappeared, then you did everything right.

Conclusion

So, we found out what the ignition module is and how to replace it with our own hands. Finally, we note that when connecting, it is important to monitor the correct connection of the entire wiring loop, since with the slightest error it will not be possible to guarantee the operability of the parts of this system.
