Today we’ll try to understand what Provence and Romanesque are. Why exactly them? It's simple - these areas are gaining popularity today. In addition, they are strikingly different from each other.
The Provence style is associated with the eponymous part of France, bounded by the Alps in the east, the Rhone River in the west, and the Mediterranean coast in the south. The nature of the region determined the features of this style, giving the world such great artists as Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Jean Cocteau, Henri Matisse.
This corner of the earth is incredibly attractive, in words you can describe only a small part of its charm. Calmness, languid bliss and bright elevated feelings - all this refers to Provence. Endless vineyards and spicy meadows alternate with cliffs, overgrown with cypresses, and pine trees, and ancient cobbled streets have been keeping the color and the extraordinary beauty of the French provinces for hundreds of years. Huge flower fields give the air warmed by the generous southern sun a special spice and dizzying aroma. There she is, a fairy tale! Peace, tranquility, naturalness, measuredness and proximity to nature, combined with strong ties with its history and traditions - this is what Provence style is . These are light, filled with the sun and simplicity of tone, grace which, however, does not hold.
The main features of the style (be it painting or interior decoration) are natural colors and materials, originality and lightness, a quiet charm of the harmony of nature and the complete exclusion of any pretentiousness, a slight imprint of antiquity. The Provencal style makes you literally rest your soul. This is exactly the case when you just want to completely relax and surrender to an unprecedented sense of calm and inner peace.
Romanesque architecture, on the contrary, is characterized by proportionality, clarity, correctness of lines and unity of elements. The Romanesque style is a style that arose after the departure into the oblivion of antiquity, i.e. after the fall of the Roman Empire. Its main feature is deep theology, as well as generalization - this style is considered to be pan-European, the individual features of any particular culture are absent in it.
All sorts of excesses and graces inherent in weightless Provence - this is not about the Romanesque style. The main thing here is form, as well as practicality. The Romanesque style is massive walls and narrow windows (square, round, trefoil-shaped), canvas shutters, monotony.
The wall decor is most often a bas-relief. A common element of the interior is carpets, special attention is paid to light. Important, but not having independent value, was sculpture - a kind of decoration of the building.
This style is a tragedy of feelings, confusion of images and great excitement, piety and restraint.
