The history of the development of higher education in Kiev
Already in the tenth century, Kiev was the main center of education in Russia, in many churches and monasteries there were libraries. The largest of them (the so-called library of Yaroslav the Wise) was located in St. Sophia Cathedral and consisted of about 1000 different books.
After the Mongol-Tatar invasion, the level of culture and education in Kiev, of course, fell significantly. The revival of the city as a scientific and educational center began only at the end of the XVII century, with the opening of the "Mogilyanka" here. And the first universities of Kiev appeared much later. This happened only in the 19th century.
In 1834, the University of St. Vladimir was founded in the city (today - Shevchenko University). Kiev is gradually becoming an important center for the formation of the Russian Empire and the entire East European region.

The first universities of Kiev began to appear in the 19th century. One of them is KNU named after Taras Shevchenko, which has its history since 1834.
The university was founded as imperial. The basis for its creation was the Kremenets collegium, which existed previously in the Ternopil region. In particular, many professors migrated from it to Kiev, as well as a library, funds of the botanical garden and various classrooms.
In the first year, only one faculty and two departments functioned here, and the university itself accepted only 62 of the first students. At different times, prominent personalities taught and worked in it: Taras Shevchenko, Nikolai Kostomarov, Ivan Vernadsky, Nikolai Andrusov and others. The university has been named after the great Ukrainian poet and kobzar since 1939, and in 1994 it was given national status.
8 institutes and 14 faculties are today in KNU. Its enclosures are scattered throughout the city. The main ones are Red and Yellow, as well as the Central Library. Maksimovich - are located in the area of Shevchenko Park in the center of Kiev. The university also has its own observatory and botanical garden.
Kiev-Mohyla Academy
1632 is the year the Academy was founded, which was established on the basis of the Kiev fraternal school. Her "father" is considered Peter the Grave - Metropolitan of Kiev. Much attention in this educational institution at that time was paid to the study of the Polish language, as well as Latin.
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the Academy was the cradle of the scientific life of the entire Russian Empire. Among her famous graduates and pupils are hetmans Ivan Mazepa and Philip Orlik, world-famous scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, philosopher Grigory Skovoroda, writer Pyotr Gulak-Artemovsky and others.

National Technical University (KPI)
"Ukrainian Harvard" is what this university is sometimes called. First of all, thanks to the appearance of its buildings. They are located on Shulyavka and represent a single architectural complex of the late XIX century, created on an area of 160 hectares.
Today KPI is one of the largest technical universities in the world. He repeatedly occupied the first lines in the ratings of Ukrainian universities. National Aviation University (NAU)
This university was founded back in 1933. But today he trains not only pilots and engineers, but also ecologists, lawyers, translators, and even sociologists. Over 50 thousand students from 49 countries of the world study in it.
15 institutes, 7 colleges and two lyceums - this is the modern structure of this educational institution. NAU has at its disposal 75 aircraft and helicopters that are used in the educational process. The university has its own airfield, radio range, a special training complex, as well as the world's only training hangar. The NAU library has over 2.5 million publications, as well as about six thousand books and textbooks in electronic format.
National Agricultural University
One of the oldest universities in Kiev, it was founded in 1898 as an agricultural branch of the KPI. In 1918, it was transformed into a separate faculty, and then, in 1923, it became an independent educational institution.
An interesting location at this university. It is located in the depths of the Goloseevsky forest, on the southern outskirts of Kiev. The buildings of the educational institution were built in the 30s, in the single architectural style of the Ukrainian neo-baroque. The author of the complex was the architect Dmitry Dyachenko.
Over the entire period of the university’s work many famous personalities and scientists have come out of its walls. In particular, this is cryobiologist Igor Smirnov, breeder Vasily Belous, academician Trofim Lysenko, as well as politicians Ivan Plusch, Alexander Moroz and Yevgeny Shevchuk (second president of the unrecognized republic of Transnistria).
National Pedagogical University named after Drahomanova
University named after Mikhail Drahomanov was established in Kiev in 1920. From the very beginning, there were only three faculties: preschool, school, and medical and pedagogical. Later, already in the 30s, their number was significantly expanded. At the same time, the evening department started working on the basis of the university.
With the advent of Soviet power, the university was named after the writer Maxim Gorky. Only in 1993 the educational institution was returned to its original name.
Today, about 20 thousand students study at the Dragomanov University. Among the graduates of the Kiev university there are many famous personalities: poet and satirist Pavel Glazova, journalist and local historian Alexander Anisimov, film director Oksana Bayrak, Ukrainian journalist Alexey Mustafin and others.
