Do-it-yourself replacement of the timing belt on the Oka

In the article we will look at how to make a replacement of the timing belt on the Oka with our own hands. In the late 80s, cars of this series first appeared on the roads of our country. And the first model is the VAZ-1111. Small cars were assembled at various plants in the country - in Naberezhnye Chelny (KamAZ), Serpukhov (exactly where they made motorized carriages for the disabled), in Togliatti. There were only two types of Oka cars, the only difference was in the engine. The drive of the car is front, the design of the gas distribution mechanism is about the same as that of the "nines" and "eights".

A few words about the engine "Oka"

The engines of the 2108 and 21083 models acted as the basis. Here are just two cylinders in the Oka engines, they are arranged in rows vertically. The camshaft is located in the head of the block, the engine displacement is 649 and 749 cubic meters. cm respectively. The increase in volume was achieved due to the fact that the diameter of the pistons was increased by 6 mm (it was 76, and it became 82). As you can understand, motors have various blocks, flywheels, pulleys, heads.

But it should be noted that most of the details are unified with 4-boiler options. The motor is powered by carburetors. On cars after 1990, they began to put not semicircular teeth on the timing pulley, but trapezoidal ones.

To increase the efficiency of the motor, you need to correctly configure the timing mechanism. To do this, set all its pulleys strictly according to the marks on the rear cover opposite the camshaft and on the crankshaft pulley.

Will the valves bend?

This question is sometimes almost the main one. Some motorists refuse to buy a car if the valve bends when the belt breaks. It is understandable, since after this it is necessary to completely repair the cylinder head. And pleasure is not very cheap. It must be said right away that on motors, which are based on 21083, the valves do not bend. In the upper part of the pistons there are recesses that do not allow to hit the valves (they are indicated by arrows in the photo).

Marks on the camshaft pulley Oka

But on the 2108 motor there is a problem of bending and it can arise in such cases:

  1. If the teeth are cut off on the drive belt.
  2. If labels are incorrectly installed on the pulleys of shafts.

To prevent a break, you need to correctly change the belt. Any motorist who knows how to handle wrenches will be able to replace the timing belt on the Oka.

How to replace the belt on the Oka?

Difficulties in replacing the timing belt on the Oka should not arise if the procedure was always carried out in a timely manner and correctly. All repairs must be carried out on a flat surface. First, place wheel chocks under the rear wheels so that the machine does not roll.

Next, you need to perform such manipulations:

  1. Remove the spare tire in the engine compartment, the washer water tank. Still need to remove the filter housing air purification and the ignition coil.
  2. Release tension on the alternator belt and remove it.
  3. Remove the plastic cover that covers the drive.
  4. Scroll the crankshaft clockwise to align all marks.
  5. Install the socket head 19 through the hole on the right mudguard onto the bolt of the crankshaft pulley. To unscrew it, you need to fix the engine from turning. To do this, put the assistant in the car, he must press the brake pedal with the included 4 and 5 speeds.

Removing and replacing a belt

Next, you need to perform a series of actions:

  1. Remove the pulley bolt and remove it.
  2. Loosen the timing belt tension.
  3. If necessary, drain antifreeze from the cooling system and replace the liquid pump.
  4. Remove the belt.
  5. Inspect the condition of all pulleys. If they are damaged, it is recommended to replace them. In the presence of contamination, a cleaning must be carried out.

Installing a new drive must be done in reverse order. But do not rush to start the engine, first crank the crankshaft manually by 2-3 turns. After that, be sure to check if the labels match. If they have shifted, make adjustments. When replacing the timing belt on the Oka, the marks must be combined as accurately as possible, otherwise the engine will be disrupted.
