Do I need a steering damper?

The steering damper is a device that resembles in its design a conventional shock absorber. Its function is to absorb unwanted vibrations and vibrations of the steering parts . Of course, the steering damper cannot completely dampen oscillations, but it can substantially reduce its amplitude and frequency.

What is the principle of work?

The principle of operation of the damper is identical to the principle inherent in all shock absorbers. In the simplest model, everything looks like this: at the base is a tank that is filled with oil, and a movable partition that divides the tank into two chambers. In addition, there are special valves (holes), the size of which can be changed. The partition makes movements in the tank, thereby changing the volume of the chambers and making it possible for the oil to circulate through the valves. At the same time, adjustment of the damping value becomes possible due to a change in the size of the valves (or, in some cases, their number) through which the oil passes. The larger the hole, the lower the degree of damping and vice versa. The partition, depending on the design, can rotate with the axis (such a steering damper is often placed on off-road sports bikes and motorcycles) or it can be connected with a rod moving back and forth (this damper is called telescopic, it is used on sports cars, off-road cars, special equipment )

What are steering dampers?

Now there are two types:

- Telescopic (Matris, Tough-Dog, Toby, HyperPro, Pro-comp, Rancho), which are similar to shock absorbers: the rod moves inside the damper body of a cylindrical shape. A piston is fixed on it, which performs the functions of a partition. Telescopic steering dampers are installed in different ways (first of all, it depends on the model of automotive equipment and mounting kit), but more often along the steering parts.

- Rotary (Ohlins, WSC, Scotts, WER), which are not like telescopic, but work on the same principle. Rotary dampers have a more robust design and are more reliable when dropped. For this reason, they have established themselves for use on off-road motorcycles. However, this does not stop using them on sportbikes.

Do I need a steering damper?

The main function of this device for an SUV is to improve handling on the roads and any type of off-road. The effect is achieved by reducing the level of vibration. In addition, driver fatigue is reduced. It is also important that after installing the damper, the wear pattern of the tires becomes more uniform, and this improves their grip. Machine control becomes more informative, at high speeds, directional stability is improved. The steering damper (UAZ and Niva, by the way, cars that are strongly recommended to put this device on) help protect the suspension elements on the road. Correct installation of the steering wheel damper is the key to the impeccable and long operation of the vehicle, as well as the safety of the driver and his passengers.

In most cases, the steering damper is installed between the frame (or body) and the steering link or between the vehicle’s axle and the steering link. Avoid installing a damper on parts that are highly biased during suspension operation.
