The history of the agrarian university in the Altai Territory began during the Great Patriotic War, when the Pushkin Agricultural Institute was transferred from Leningrad to Barnaul.
Over the years, the institution has changed its name several times, now its name is Altai State Agrarian University. The generally accepted abbreviation is AltGAU.
