Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant works closely with ZMZ. The latter is actively supplying gas engines to Ulyanovsk citizens. General acquaintance
For the first time this power unit was published in the 96th year. This is an atmospheric gasoline engine, which was characterized by a relatively high compression ratio and lower fuel consumption. Most often, it was equipped with the ZMZ-409 UAZ Patriot engine. But also this motor is found on GAZelles and Sables. Earlier, the Ulyanovsk people used the 409th engine on the Symbir, which became the successor to the obsolete 469th UAZ.
Motor in 2003 underwent small changes. So, now he began to meet Euro-3 emission standards, thanks to the installed catalyst and an upgraded camshaft system.
How do the ZMZ-409 technical specifications look?
The basis of the described engine was taken injector 405th engine. The new model has a similar cast - iron cylinder block. Its height is comparable to the 405th motor. However, the design uses an upgraded crankshaft. 409 ZMZ has a mechanism with an increased stroke. If on the 405th it was 86 millimeters, then on the 409th it was already 94. Remarkably, the connecting rods remained the same. Many parts are interchangeable with the 405th engine. However, the pistons themselves have an offset of 4 millimeters.
The block head, pallet and attachments remain the same.

- The motor is characterized by an injection power system and an in-line arrangement of cylinders.
- The gas distribution system is chain driven.
- The inlet uses 2 valves per cylinder (the unit is marked 8V).
- The block head is aluminum.
- The compression ratio is 10 atmospheres.
- The cylinder diameter is 95.5 mm.
- With a working volume of 2.7 liters (to be more precise, 2693 cm³), the engine develops from 112 to 143 horsepower, depending on the degree of forcing.
- Torque - from 210 to 230 Nm.
The engine is designed for fuel consumption with an octane rating - A92. The curb weight of the Zavolzhsky engine without attachments is 190 kg. The motor is equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox.
Fuel consumption
Fuel consumption by the manufacturer is not regulated. And there are understandable reasons. After all, this engine aggregates both cars and trucks. So, on a UAZ Patriot car in a combined cycle, this indicator, as a rule, is 16 liters in summer and 18 liters in winter operation. But at the "Loaf" and "Sable" this figure is 15% higher.
Oil
The engine uses a combination lubrication system. In total, 7 liters of oil are used here. However, when replacing, only 6 liters can be drained. As for the type of oil, products of different viscosity can be used in this motor - from 5W-30 to 20W-40.
The manufacturer regulates fluid replacement every 8 thousand kilometers. The Zavolzhsky Motor Plant also distinguishes such a parameter as the natural oil consumption per unit mileage. So, for 1 thousand kilometers this indicator should be no more than 100 g (roughly say, a liter topped up to a subsequent replacement).
Resource
According to the theoretical data of the manufacturing plant, the resource of the Zavolzhsky ZMZ-409 engine is 150 thousand kilometers. In practice, the numbers are significantly different. For some car owners, the motor breaks down to 100 thousand, while for others, overhaul occurs only after 180.
How to extend the resource?
The first rule to increase the resource is the timely replacement of consumables. Air and oil filters change every 8 thousand kilometers. If the car is used in a polluted (dusty) area, it is recommended to change the air element 2 times more often.
Along with the grease, the oil filter also changes. The regulation here is 7 thousand km, but not more than 10 thousand km. Also pay attention to the color of the oil. Periodically check its level, since the natural lubrication can be up to one liter.
The resource of the timing chain mechanism is 80 thousand kilometers. Further, the drive begins to stretch and make a characteristic sound. This negatively affects the operation of the valves and camshaft.
If this motor is used on commercial vehicles, overloads should be excluded. The described engine does not like high loads.
ZMZ-409 today
Oddly enough, but this motor is still mass-produced. Now it can be found on many UAZ models:

- "Loaf";
- "Patriot";
- Canter
As for GAZ cars, the modern Gazelles are equipped with Cummins or UMZ-4216 engines (Evotek, 2.7 liters). Gradually, the ZMZ-409 is losing popularity due to the fact that it has weak technical characteristics.
ZMZ-409 and its malfunctions
For several years of operation, car owners have identified a list of problems with this engine. The first is chain tensioners . The mechanism may jam. Because of this, the motor will need serious repairs. ZMZ-409 due to the lack of oscillation begins to make noise in the area of the circuit. As a result, the “shoe” is destroyed and the drive jumps to one or several teeth.
Another problem is the tendency to overheat. Also, owners of cars with the 405th and 406th engines are faced with this. This is due to a clogged radiator or a jammed thermostat, because of which the coolant circulates only in a small circle. Antifreeze should be changed every 60 thousand kilometers or every 3 years, in order to avoid problems with internal corrosion, and also constantly check the system for air jams.
Now about the oil consumption in the motor ZMZ-409. We examined the technical characteristics of this engine, and we mentioned the "natural" oil consumption. The manufacturer knows this problem, but has not taken any measures to eliminate it. Motorists say that maslozhor is hidden in a labyrinth oil trap with rubber tubes.
The design is not technological. If there is a gap between the labyrinth plate and the valve cover, the oil instantly goes outside. Is repair possible? The solution to this problem is to seal a metal plate with a sealant. For the time being, this does not solve the maslozhor problem, but it can reduce its consumption to 500 milliliters by 8 thousand.
Electronics Issues
Very often there are problems with wiring and relays. In the latter case, it comes to the fact that the machine is completely impossible to start. Under the hood are the starter and fuel pump start relays. Both can be “buggy”, and on the go (the car stalls due to a cut in fuel supply by the pump). The solution to the problem is cleaning contacts. Often the relay closes to ground. But for a long time this procedure does not save.
Conclusion
So, we found out what characteristics ZMZ-409 has. The motor did not work out revolutionary. This is the same 405th engine with the same problems. That is why the Gorky Automobile Plant refused to purchase this power unit.
