As of September 2017, there are two institutes and a branch at the university, more than ten faculties work in the institution itself, where masters of pedagogy educate the younger generation.
VGSPU: the history of creation and formation
The 1930s were remembered for the fundamental transformations that affected absolutely all the inhabitants of the Soviet Union. It was then that a program was launched that aimed at getting residents of the country of primary education, which required a huge number of specialists in this field. Thanks to her, in 1931 the Volgograd Social Pedagogical University appeared, which at that time was called the Stalingrad Industrial Pedagogical Institute.
It was originally planned that in this educational institution they will train engineers and teachers, who will then go to work in technical schools, schools and FZU and carry out polytechnic there. However, already in 1932, humanitarian faculties appeared in it, and another five years later the Teacher Institute appeared at the institution, where the duration of study was only two years, and its graduates could only work in grades 5-7. By 1941, the Stalingrad Pedagogical Institute was one of the largest educational institutions in the south of the USSR; about 500 teachers graduated from it annually.
EGSPU: The Great Patriotic War and its consequences
The war, which went down in the history of mankind as the most terrible and destructive, claimed the lives of many teachers and students of the institute, which is now called the Volgograd Social and Pedagogical University. In the period from September 1942 to November 1943, the Institute suspended its work due to a lack of teaching staff and students. As a result of the war, Stalingrad was almost completely destroyed, so it was possible to restore all previously used buildings only by 1949. Around the same time, the university stopped experiencing a shortage of faculty.

In 1953, the Teachers' Institute ceased its work; its capacities were transferred to an industrial pedagogical institution. Particular emphasis in the work of the institute was placed on the teaching of foreign languages, as well as on equipping existing faculties with all the necessary capacities. Around the same time, additional sets of postgraduate studies at the faculties of pedagogy and history were opened. In 1961, the university was renamed the Volgograd State Pedagogical Institute.

The higher education institution successfully coped with the crisis years of 1990, practically without losing all its valuable teaching staff.
