Zaporozhye is a city in southern Ukraine, which is the center of the administrative region of the same name. Until 1921 it was called Aleksandrovsk. With the advent of Soviet power, the city was renamed. The population of Zaporozhye, as of October 1, 2016, is 752472 people. By this indicator, the city is the sixth in Ukraine. It is believed that the city was founded in 952. This is the native land of the Cossacks. However, people have lived here since the Middle Paleolithic period, which was facilitated by a favorable climate and convenient geographical location.

During this period, the population of Zaporozhye amounted to only 300 people. After 14 years, it has grown 4 times. In 1795, the population of Zaporozhye amounted to 1,200 people. Since June 16, 1806 it received the status of a city. In 1861, 3800 people lived in Zaporozhye. The boundary of 10 thousand was passed between 1885 and 1894. In 1897, the population of Zaporozhye was 16,400 people, in the 1899th - 21,500.
Another round of growth occurred between 1910 and 1913. Then the population grew from 38 thousand to 63.6. In 1917, the number of people living in Zaporozhye decreased by almost 15,000. In 1917, the population of the city amounted to 58.5 thousand. Virtually nothing has changed in the next ten years. By the end of the 1930s, the population of the city amounted to 289.2 thousand people. This is four times more than 13 years ago.
During the first two years of World War II, the population of Zaporozhye decreased almost three times. However, already in 1956 it amounted to 381 thousand people, which is 1.3 times more than in 1939. Until 1992, the population continued to grow. During this period, it reached its peak. In 1992, 897.6 thousand people lived in the city.
After the collapse of the USSR, the population began to gradually decline. In 2001, 815.3 thousand already lived in the city, and in 2013, 770.7. By area

As of August 1, 2014, the largest district of the city is Shevchenkovsky. One fifth of the population lives here. This area was highlighted in 1970. Then there lived 133 thousand people. At that time, the most densely populated area was Ordzhonikidzevsky (now - Ascension).
The second largest is now the Dnieper (formerly Leninsky). Here lives 18% of the population. This is 137170 people.

It should be noted that initially Zaporozhye was divided into three regions: October, Leninsky and Ordzhonikidzevsky. In 1959, it was the first that was the most densely populated. Now he is in last place. In 1970, two more districts were identified - Zavodskaya and Shevchenkovsky. During this period, most people lived in Ordzhonikidzevsky. In 1979, another district was added - Kommunarsky. By this time, Ordzhonikidzevsky had already lost the palm by the number of Leninsky residents.
In 2001, a modern administrative division of the city was formalized. Since that time, the most densely populated area is Shevchenkovsky.
National composition
According to the 2001 census, the following groups can be distinguished:
- Ukrainians. They make up the largest part of the population. This is 70.3% of the total number or 573 thousand people.
- Russians. They make up about a quarter of the population. This is about 207 thousand people.
- Others. Belarusians make up 0.7% of the total population of Zaporozhye, Bulgarians - 0.4%, Jews - 0.4%, Georgians - 0.4%, Armenians - 0.4%, Tatars - 0.3%, Azerbaijanis - 0 , 2%, Gypsies - 0.1%, Poles - 0.1%, Germans - 0.1%, Moldavians - 0.1%, Greeks - 0.1%.

Language groups
Most Cossacks speak Russian. According to the 2001 census, 56.8% of the population consider this language to be their native language. However, almost half of the population speaks Ukrainian.
If we consider the historical dynamics, then a sharp increase in the use of Russian occurred after the Bolsheviks came to power. In 1897, only 24.8% spoke it. The increase in the number of Russian speakers did not occur due to a decrease in the share of Ukrainian speakers, but because of a decrease in the use of Jewish. In 2001, a negligible number of people indicated him as a native.
It should be noted that the smallest number of Ukrainian speakers was recorded in 1926 - only 33.8%.
