Primer for interior work: types of mixture and consumption

In order to process different surfaces during construction and repair work, a liquid primer is used. Thanks to the soil, the base is strengthened several times and the quality of its adhesion is significantly improved. Usually, a primer for interior use is applied before applying any topcoat. Otherwise, the risk of defects on the finish after a while increases. Having saved a little money on the purchase of soil, it is possible to spend more on restoring the finish coating.

Primer for wooden surfaces

Primer for wood substrates

A primer is used for interior work in order to prepare the wooden base of the room for painting with oil and acrylic paints. Surfaces become dull or semi-dull. Adding glossy fillers deteriorates the adhesive properties. Soil is used to impregnate the ends of wooden structures to minimize the risk of moisture. In addition, the soil composition is necessary to reduce the appearance of defects during the restoration of various wooden structures.

The primer for wood for internal work is applied with a wide brush. The composition does not drip. Due to the viscosity and density of the soil, work with a spray gun or similar spraying devices is not possible. Surface finishing with a large area is a rather complicated process, which should be done only by a specialist. Primer solutions are transported and stored at low ambient temperatures. It is important to remember that freezing the mixture reduces the properties of the product.

Soil for metal

In this situation, the choice of primer solution depends on the type of metal. For example, if we talk about aluminum, an excellent option is a mixture that contains phosphates in its composition. To eliminate the risk of corrosion processes, it is important to use alkyd-based or alkyd-urethane primers for internal work.

Primer for concrete substrates

Concrete primer

For the treatment of the concrete base, builders use an epoxy or polyurethane primer. Before applying enamel to concrete, acrylic primer mixtures are often used.

Universal soil

The most common type of primers for internal work are universal compounds that have the property of deep penetration. After application, the mixture penetrates the material to a certain depth, and “sticks” it, making the top layer more durable.

So that the dust does not clog into the top layer of the material and does not absorb moisture, the primer forms a film, which also improves its adhesion (adhesion) to the topcoat. In appearance, the primer mixture is similar to milk and with a faint smell of resin.

The strengthening soil VAK

This composition is being produced to perform internal work. Opaque white primer can be safely attributed to the universal and strengthening emulsion suspensions of high grades. The primer for internal work of the Higher Attestation Commission includes the following main ingredients:

  • Latex - colloidal dispersion.
  • Drying oil or resins that increase the viscosity of the solution.
  • Hardener that can speed up the drying process.
  • Auxiliary components are small particles of marble, mica, lime and chalk.
  • The modified part is vinyl acrylic.

Material consumption

The following factors affect the amount of primer used for indoor and outdoor use:

  1. Type of surface. For example, if the base of the interior is highly friable and porous, the primer consumption will be increased. In this situation, experts select the appropriate grades of the mixture - acrylic deep penetration.
  2. The number of layers applied. If you need to process a smoother surface of 10-12 square meters. m in a couple of layers, then one liter of primer mixture will be enough.
  3. Rough or highly absorbent materials (such as drywall or concrete) will require a greater consumption of primer. The package indicates the required number of layers when processing this or that type of material.
  4. Used tools. Please note that working with a brush will require a lot of labor, but the consumption of the mixture will be much less than if using a roller.

Thus, the selection of a primer mixture for internal work is dictated by many factors. With a correctly selected mixture, you can save money on the consumption of the primer, save time for finishing work and carry out repairs more efficiently.
