To ensure safe traffic at intersections, sign No. 2.5 “No traffic is prohibited without stopping” is installed at railway crossings. The methods of its installation are determined by GOST R 52289-2009. It says where the stop sign should be, where to stop. The appearance of the sign is determined by the international convention: an octagon with the inscription STOP.
By law, inscriptions in the language of the country that uses it are permitted on this sign. In the Russian Federation you can find a sign with the inscription STOP, and in other countries - STOP. The color of the letters can be white, as well as blue or black. The main background is not always red, yellow is also used, which indicates a temporary use of the sign.
The history of the appearance of the sign
The need to develop a sign was first spoken by W.F. Hainaut in 1900. According to him, this sign was supposed to help cope with the ongoing chaos on the roads. As a result, the first sign of the mandatory installation was installed in Detroit fifteen years after Eno's proposal. Not everyone liked the idea of the sign.
In 1923, the sign acquired its octagonal appearance. It was at this time that the decision was made to use uniform formats of road signs. So “Stop” began to differ from other signs, attracting drivers.
Initially, the background color was yellow, but after it was decided to make it red. This was a real problem for the Americans, since there was a lot of yellow indelible paint, but there was no red. And then they came up with a porcelain coating that has not been washed away by rain for many years.
Sign Features
Sign 2.5 is installed in difficult places where it is necessary to ensure traffic safety. It can be intersections of city roads, highways, unregulated intersections, at the places of entry to the main road with a secondary, T-shaped intersections, on roads with limited visibility. If the visibility of the road is sufficient, then it is permitted to use the sign 2.4 “Go the way.
The main requirement 2.5 is that non-stop traffic is prohibited. The installation location decides where to stop. The stop sign determines the order of travel of vehicles. Initially, the movement is made by all participants in the movement, located on a side, intersected road. The last one to ride is the one who stands under the sign. The traffic controller can change the order of travel.
Sign Requirements
The established sign requires that drivers give way to the intersected part in two directions, along the main road.
It is also forbidden to cross the white strip 1.12, which the plate 6.16 can duplicate. All these signs oblige drivers at crossings not to run into the line, and if it is not there, then stop before reaching the sign. At the intersection, a stop is made at the edge of the road intersections, but this is provided that there is no line 1.12 or plate 6.16.
Stop line
Most often, 2.5 is supplemented by a stop line, which determines where to stop under the Stop sign for a vehicle. According to the SDA, both the sign and the line should be located in one section with the road. Stopping over the stop line is prohibited. Also, do not run into a pedestrian crossing.
Often a stop line is applied at intersections regulated by traffic lights. In this case, it shows where the cars should stop at the Stop sign. Pass-through through it is allowed, but only if the green traffic light is on. In other cases, you should definitely make a stop in front of the line, not allowing collisions with it. If the line is poorly visible or is not there, then stopping is accepted 5 meters before the intersection of roads.
Mark 6.16
At those intersections that are regulated by traffic lights, sign 6.16 is established. It determines where to stop. The Stop Line sign is usually installed on the traffic light pole, above the roadway, on the right on the side of the road. According to the law, it can be installed in two ways: singly or with duplication. In the first case, the sign is mounted on a support. In the second case, the “Stop” markup duplicates it. They are located on the same line and determine the place where to stop in front of the stop sign.
Sign 6.16 is usually located on unregulated railway crossings with sign 2.5 at a distance of ten meters from the first rail, and can be installed individually.
Application
Permitted high-speed driving on highways is dangerous at the places of their intersection with secondary roads, as well as where there is a highway exit. In these places, the stop sign is required. Where to stop if there is one on the road? It all depends on what other add-ons are available.
Drivers are informed in advance that ahead is 2.5 "Driving without stopping is prohibited." This happens as follows: on the side of the road, a sign is pre-installed with a sign indicating the distance to the sign 2.5. The stopping order at the sign may be violated only by special vehicles. They should be skipped and only then go to the intersection, completing the maneuver.
At intersections that are regulated by traffic lights, 2.5 is not applicable.
Driving without errors
If 2.5 is installed, then each driver must drive the section of the road correctly. And if the Stop sign is set, where to stop and how to drive through such an intersection?
The main requirement of the sign is a complete stop of the vehicle, and only after that traffic is allowed. You can’t slow down, even if there are no other road users in sight, including pedestrians, cyclists. So where on the SDA stop under the sign "Stop", in which place?
Driving along the road on which the sign is installed may be of the following options:
- A vehicle that moves ahead, approaching the place of placement of the sign, completely stops. Then the machine following him does the same.
- If two cars drive up to the sign at once, then both are obliged to stop. After stopping, the driver on the right begins to move first.
- Driving is permitted only if there are no pedestrians on the road.
- It is allowed to start traffic at the intersection only if other traffic participants traveling along the intersected road are far away and their speed does not exceed the speed limit allowed for this section of the road.
To pass the intersection, a stop is made at the edge of the intersected roadway. But a stop on the road section before the railway crossing is made in front of the sign. If there is a stop line, the machine must stop in front of it. You must not be allowed to run over the lane.
Fines
If the driver does not know where to stop in front of the Stop sign, he will face a fine. Its size is determined by the place of violation of traffic rules. Within the city, the size of the fine is determined by Article 12.16 Part 1. If there was a violation related to a stop at the sign, but there was no violation of the intersection, for example, the driver did not turn in a forbidden direction, then the fine will be small. If the rules of rotation were violated, then the administrative penalty will increase in size. The law also provides for punishment for movement through railway crossings. If the driver does not stop at the sign and immediately passes the crossing, then this is considered a traffic violation, for which a fine is imposed under article 12.20, part 2. The fine is issued by the traffic police inspector and draws up a violation protocol.

To avoid administrative violation, you must comply with traffic rules, correctly passing intersections, crossings where the Stop sign is installed. It will also help protect yourself and other road users from accidents that may occur on a dangerous section of the road.
