The characteristics, capabilities and specifications of the Asus P5LD2 motherboard will be discussed in detail in the review material that is brought to your attention. The connection of this computer product to other components of the PC will also be described, reviews of the owners are given.
Briefly about this product
Asus P5LD2 is essentially a series of motherboards. But since the set of system logic and socket are identical, then there are no such significant differences between them. The most advanced version of this motherboard is indicated by the code word DELUXE. The more modest versions were designated as VM, SE, VM-DH and VM-SE.
The chipset of this motherboard
Like most solutions of the time, Asus P5LD2 is based on a 2-component system logic set, which consists of north and south bridges. The first of them was Intel P945, and the second was ICH7R from the same Intel corporation. An important feature of the cooling system of this product family was that they were equipped with a passive cooling system. A larger radiator was installed on the north bridge, and a small one on the south. This constructive solution was more than enough for the stable and reliable operation of a computer system. But the noise level due to this technical solution was maintained at an acceptable level.
Socket
Any Asus P5LD2 motherboard was based on the processor socket 775. These solutions made it possible to install both single-core CPUs and dual-core processors. But 4-core chips, although this platform had it, but due to limitations on the part of BIOS they could not be installed in such motherboards.
Processors
An impressive list of chips supported solutions of the Asus P5LD2 family. The processors of the following modifications could be installed in motherboards of this series:
Pentium 4 with one computing module and with system bus frequencies of 533/800/1066 MHz.
Two-module Pentium D and Pentium E with system bus frequencies of 800/1066 MHz.
Dual-core Seleron D with a system bus frequency of 533 MHz.
Cor 2 Duo with two computing units and a 1066 MHz system bus frequency. Also with the same characteristics were supported “Cor 2 Extreme” chips.
Separately, it should be noted that more productive solutions based on central processing units with 2 computational modules could be installed with such a motherboard only after updating the BIOS. If this procedure is not performed, then problems could arise with the definition of the CPU model.
Graphic arts
To implement the graphics subsystem, this family of motherboards was equipped with only one PCI Express x16 slot. Therefore, it is impossible to install two video accelerators in such a PC at once. But the presence of just such a slot allows even modern graphics cards to be installed in such computer systems, for example, Ge Force 970. But the question of expediency remains open. When installing such an advanced graphic solution, the remaining components of the computer system will not allow it to fully reveal its potential.
RAM
All motherboards of this series were manufactured in ATX format. As a result, they were equipped with 4 slots for installing RAM modules. In this case, only DDR2 with frequencies of 400, 533 and 667 MHz could be used. Another feature of this family of computer products is that it supported a 2-channel mode. That is, these motherboards are focused on the use of 2 RAM modules at once, and at the same time, the level of productivity increased. That is, it is more correct to use 2 modules of 1 GB in such a computer system than one, but 2 GB. This will allow in practice, with other identical components, to obtain a 10-15 percent increase in productivity. The maximum amount of RAM that such a motherboard can address was 4GB.
Interfaces
An impressive set of interfaces was implemented in products of the Asus P5LD2 family. Characteristics they had the following in this regard:
PCI slots - 3pcs.
Slots PCI Express x1 - 3pcs.
IDE ports for connecting hard drives and CD drives - 2 pcs.,
but the total number of such devices may be equal to 4.
SATA ports for connecting to a computer system of a CD-ROM drive and a hard disk - 4pcs.
A sound card based on the Realtek ALC882 chip is integrated into the motherboard and, as a result, there are audio ports on the motherboard for the speaker system and microphone.
There is also an Ethernet network port on the motherboard, at the hardware level the capabilities of which are provided by the Marvell 88E8053 chip.
There are 2 PS / 2 ports for connecting peripheral devices. Also
There is one COM port and one LPT port.
The number of ports on the universal serial bus motherboard is 4. An additional 2 USB ports can be routed to the back of the system unit using a special expansion bracket.
Connection
A 20-pin connector, the top row of which is numbered from left to right from 1 to 10, and the bottom - from 11 to 20, the front panel is located in the right corner of any Asus P5LD2 series motherboard. The front panel connection is shown in table 1.
Table 1. Front panel connection on Asus P5LD2 series motherboards.
No. p / p | Name | Contacts |
one. | PLED - an indication of the availability of power on the motherboard. | 1 (PLED +), 2 (free contact), 3 (PLED-). |
2. | SPEAKER - connecting a system speaker for sound indication of possible computer system malfunctions. | 7 (power + 5V), 8 (free contact), 9 (free contact), 10 (active output). |
3. | IDE_LED - indication of the hard drive. | 11 (power + 5V), 12 (active output). |
four. | PWRSW - PC power button. | 16 (power + 5V), 17 (input). |
5. | RESET - emergency reboot of a computer system. | 19 (power + 5V), 20 (input). |
Note: All power wires on the front panel of the system unit are always the same color - white. The remaining wires are in a different color.
Reviews
Any Asus P5LD2 motherboard is a time-tested solution. Of course, now its performance leaves much to be desired. The most serious tasks on such computer systems will not work normally. These are the most demanding toys, and graphic editors, and other demanding applications to the PC hardware resources. But for such simple tasks as web surfing, office suites and simple toys, their computing resources will definitely be enough. Reviews highlight the high reliability of such personal computers. At the time of the release of this series of products, their level of functionality was one of the best. Now it is no longer enough to create a good computer system. Among the other advantages of such PCs, it is necessary to highlight their low noise level during operation: after all, a passive cooling system based on two aluminum radiators of the motherboard makes itself felt.
Summary
A series of motherboards from Asus P5LD2 in 2006-2008 made it possible to assemble truly productive PCs that could solve a wide range of problems. At the same time, an impressive list of modifications of this product made it possible to choose exactly the solution that was ideally suited for the financial capabilities of a particular buyer.
