USB-B Overview

At the moment, there are several types of USB-connectors: the interface is available in three versions (1.1, 2.0 and 3.0). The first one is practically not used due to the low speed, it can be found exclusively on old personal computers. The second version currently occupies a dominant position, despite the fact that this type of interface is, so to speak, a bottleneck in the organization of data transfer. These connectors, in fact, inhibit the operation of modern hard drives and other types of data storage devices. But for connecting peripheral devices, the mentioned type is considered ideal.

The third version refers to the new generation, connectors of this type are marked in blue. This article is devoted to a separate subtype of this interface - USB-B. These connectors are available in two versions - 2.0 and 3.0, in addition, they are classified by size (standard, mini and micro).

USB-B: version 2.0

The specified interface is not very popular. Each modification of such a connector has a trapezoidal or square shape. The full-size traditional USB-B type connector is the only one that has a square cross-section. Due to its relatively large size, it is used in a variety of large-sized peripheral devices, such as scanners, printers, and sometimes in ADSL modems. Manufacturers of multifunction devices and printers do not usually bundle their products with such cables, so you have to buy them separately.

The main reason for the appearance of such connectors was the abundance of miniature devices and portable hard drives. Unlike large four-pin connectors, this option has 5 pins. However, minimizing the interface negatively affected its reliability. With constant use, the USB-Mini-B connector starts to become loose over time. Currently, these connectors are actively used in players, card readers, portable hard drives and other compact devices. However, this type of interface is gradually being replaced by a new, even more miniature connector - a micro type.

Micro USB Type B Connector, Version 2.0

This interface is a modification of the previous version (mini). Small overall dimensions of the connector allow it to be used in modern miniature devices (tablets, smartphones, etc.). Thanks to the improved mounting design, the connector sits tightly in the slot, does not fall out when moving the device. In 2011, this interface was adopted as a single standard for charging phones, smartphones, players and other miniature equipment. This solution allowed using a single cable to charge any electronic gadget. The mentioned standard today demonstrates high growth trends, so we can expect that in the near future all new devices will be equipped with the specified interface.

Type B Connector Version 3.0

This connector is used in large and medium peripheral devices with high performance, as well as in hard drives of stationary use. This connector has undergone major changes, so it is not compatible with version 2.0. Cables with such a connector, as well as 2.0, can be found on sale infrequently.
